Show HideSt. Paschal Baylon was a religious brother who lived in Spain in the 1500s. He was a member of the Franciscan religious order. He was very drawn to a life of poverty.
St. Paschal Baylon lived a life of great virtue. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy friar in many aspects of your life.
About St. Paschal Baylon
St. Paschal Baylon was born in 1540. His parents were peasants, but they were very devout Catholics. He had three siblings.
Paschal’s father was a shepherd, and Paschal assisted him with shepherding work from an early age. During Paschal’s childhood, he began to feel called to religious life. He was able to learn to read by looking in a book called the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary that his mother gave him and by asking others to help him learn the words.
Because Paschal’s family was poor, his father arranged for him to be employed tending others’ sheep. This gave Paschal the opportunity to positively influence many people who were prone to cursing and fighting. They eventually came to respect his virtue and began to refrain from their vices when they were around him.
Paschal’s mother sent food with him so he could eat while he was tending sheep, but he often gave part of it away to the poor. He was always very honest in all of his work and even felt compelled to offer to pay for any damage to crops that his sheep caused others.
When Paschal began to tell others about his desire to enter religious life, several people suggested rich monasteries for him to enter. But he replied that he was born poor and felt inclined to live out the rest of his life in poverty and penance.
Paschal was initially turned away from entry to the Franciscans because he was too young. But in 1564, he was able to join the Franciscans as a brother. Though others suggested he become a priest, he did not feel called to the priesthood.
As a Franciscan friar, Paschal lived a life of great poverty and virtue. He wore a threadbare habit and was known to walk barefoot even in the snow. One of his main jobs in the friary was to be the official beggar who went out and asked for alms. He also worked as the porter, caring for the poor who came begging at the door of the friary. Paschal became known for his generosity as well as his humility.
Paschal meditated often, even while working. He frequently experienced ecstasies, and he sometimes spent entire nights in silent prayer.
Paschal also became known for his deep devotion to and love for the Eucharist. On one occasion, he was nearly killed by a mob of Calvanists for defending the teaching of the Real Presence.
In 1952, Paschal contracted an illness and died. His tomb very quickly became a place of pilgrimage, and many began to report miracles after seeking his intercession.
