About Blessed Engelmar Unzeitig
Blessed Engelmar Unzeitig was born on March 1, 1911, as Hubert Unzeitig. His place of birth was Greifendorf in what was then Czechoslovakia. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he had at least one sister.
When Hubert was eighteen years old, he felt God calling him to religious life. He began studying for the priesthood. He discerned that God was calling him to enter the Mariannhill Missionaries. Soon, he entered the novitiate of the order in Reimlingen, Germany.
Hubert took the name Engelmar, and he made his final profession of vows in the Missionary Order of Mariannhill in May of 1938. On August 6, 1939, he was ordained as a priest. Just a month later, World War II began.
The newly ordained Father Engelmar was assigned to Glockelberg, Austria, as a parish priest in 1940. Around a year later, Father Engelmar became a target of the Nazis because he was known to speak out against them. After they learned that he was preaching sermons in which he defended Jews, the Gestapo arrested him on April 21, 1941.
Father Engelmar was given no trial for his alleged crimes. Instead, he was sent to the Dachau concentration camp on June 8, 1941.
Despite the sufferings he faced in Dachau, Father Engelmar made holy use of his time by ministering to the other prisoners as a pastor. He studied Russian so that he might be able to minister to the Russian prisoners.
During his time in Dachau, he also wrote letters to his sister about the suffering of the prisoners and finding God’s love there. He wrote: “Even behind the hardest sacrifices and worst suffering stands God with His Fatherly love, who is satisfied with the good will of His children and gives them and others happiness.”
He also wrote to her, “God’s almighty grace helps us overcome obstacles. . . . Love doubles our strength, makes us inventive, makes us feel content and inwardly free. If people would only realize what God has in store for those who love Him!”
In 1944, Father Engelmar volunteered to care for those suffering from typhoid fever. It was not long before he contracted typhoid himself.
On March 2, 1945, Father Engelmar died from typhoid. He was cremated, but his ashes were able to be smuggled to Wurzburg. He was hailed as the “Angel of Dachau” because of his holy work in that place of suffering.
Father Engelmar was beatified in 2016 and was recognized as having died in odium fidei, or “in hatred of the faith.”
