About Mother Angelica
Mother Angelica was born in 1923 as Rita Antoinette Rizzo. She lived in Ohio in a community of immigrants. She was the only child of her parents.
When Rita was five years old, her father abandoned her and her mother. Her parents soon divorced, and Rita’s mother became chronically depressed. They moved in with Rita’s grandparents because of financial difficulties.
Rita was educated at a Catholic parish school, but she received harsh treatment from the nuns who disapproved of her parents’ divorce. During her high school years, Rita did poorly in school because she was very worried that her mother might commit suicide.
During this time, Rita began to feel overwhelmed by the noise around her at high school. She was deemed to have a nervous condition and was given medication for it.
Rita soon began to suffer from a stomach problem that caused her severe pain for several years. Her mother brought her to visit a mystic and stigmatic named Rhoda Wise, and Rita’s stomach ailment was miraculously cured soon after. This experience greatly influenced Rita and gave her the desire to give her life to God.
In 1944, Rita began to feel that God was calling her to religious life. After discerning that she was better suited for contemplative life than for an active order, she joined the Poor Clares and became Sister Mary Angelica of the Annunciation in 1945.
Shortly after entering the Poor Clares, Angelica was injured in an accident with an industrial floor scrubbing machine. The injury forced her to wear leg braces for most of her life and gave her continual pain.
In 1953 at the Sancta Clara monastery in Ohio, Angelica made her solemn profession of vows. During her time at the Sancta Clara monastery, she began to desire to establish a religious community that would appeal to African American women. She and other Poor Clares worked to raise the money needed for this by selling fishing lures.
In 1962, this community was officially established in Irondale, Alabama. Angelica became officially known as Mother Angelica. The monastery was called Our Lady of the Angels Monastery. Only two percent of the area’s population was Catholic.
Also in 1962, Mother Angelica began to record some talks she was giving on matters pertinent to the Faith. The bishop saw that she had a talent in speaking to lay people about the Faith, and he encouraged her to continue. She soon began a radio show and published a book. Then, she started taping some talks for the Christian Broadcasting Network.
In 1978, Mother Angelica visited Chicago as part of a speaking tour. She toured a television studio run by Baptists, and she declared that she needed to have one of these herself. She soon established EWTN, which would go on to become the largest Catholic television network in the world.
Mother Angelica’s health began to decline in 2001. She suffered multiple strokes, eventually becoming bedridden. She suffered greatly from the effects of the stroke, heart disease, and asthma. She offered all of her sufferings in union with Christ, telling those caring for her to do all they could to keep her alive as long as possible so that she might have more sufferings to offer up. She died on Easter Sunday in 2016.

Additionally, Mother Angelica is a great person to seek prayers from if you are experiencing difficulties in your family life, since she endured a lot of suffering from difficulties in her family life during childhood.

Mother Angelica, you did not have the benefit of a stable and loving family life. But despite the sufferings you endured as the result of your unstable family life, you began on the path to holiness and serving God.
Please bring my petitions before God Whom you served!
You overcame a lot of suffering and obstacles in your early life. You eventually chose to dedicate your life to God by becoming a nun in the Poor Clare order.
Pray for me, that I may never allow hardships or obstacles to deter me from serving God. Pray that I may grow in love for God each day.

Mother Angelica, your childhood was full of sufferings and trials. Your mother’s fragile mental health and your parents’ divorce led to great sufferings from poverty. Despite your difficult past, you chose to serve God as a Poor Clare.

You willingly embraced a life of poverty and sacrifice as a member of the Poor Clare religious order. You embarked on a life of self-denial and service to God.
Pray for me, that I may always embrace trials and sufferings out of love for God. Pray that I may do all I can to serve God wholeheartedly.
