There are many ways we might sin and offend God during our time on earth. Our fallen nature and our inclination to sin make it inevitable that we will sin against Him at some point in our lives. Whenever we offend God through sin, it is very important that we repent and return to Him in contrition.
God is always ready to forgive our sins. He asks us to truly repent and to be contrite for our sins. Perfect contrition means that we regret our sins out of love for Him and because we have hurt Him, who is all good. Imperfect contrition means that we repent because we dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell.
We should do our best to be truly contrite for all of our sins, and we should pray for the grace of perfect contrition in our lives.
Let’s offer prayers in this Novena of Contrition that we may be truly contrite and may be forgiven our sins.
Why Pray the Novena of Contrition?
You can pray the Novena of Contrition if you are returning to the Church after living life away from God’s fold for a time. You can pray the Novena of Contrition to ask God to help you be truly contrite for your sins. You can also pray this novena as an offering of penance to God for the offenses you have committed against Him.
You can pray the Novena of Contrition if you are struggling with feelings of guilt over a large sin you have committed. Or you can pray the Novena of Contrition if you have repented of many sins from your past.
Novena of Contrition Prayers
Novena of Contrition - Day 1
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Dear Lord, we thank You for forgiving our sins, and we praise You for Your mercy toward us. We come before You today to offer You prayers of contrition for our sins.
Throughout our lives, we commit many sins and offenses against You. We know that You are all good and worthy of all our love. We know that we must repent of any sins we commit against You. You can help us to have true and perfect contrition each time we sin against You.
Please hear our prayers of contrition, and we particularly pray today that You help us to have true contrition for our sins.
Help us to grow to a deeper love of You each day of our lives. Give us the grace to grow in unity with You at every opportunity You give us.

Dear Lord, we thank You for forgiving our sins, and we praise You for Your mercy toward us. We come before You today to offer You prayers of contrition for our sins.
Your love for each one of us is infinitely deeper than we can ever understand. You call us to love You in return with as much faithfulness as we can, and You call us to do all things out of love for You. In our fallen humanity, we do not always love You faithfully, but You can help us to grow in love for You.

Help us to truly strive to become saints, each day of our lives. Give us the grace to serve You faithfully in every circumstance we encounter.

Dear Lord, we thank You for forgiving our sins, and we praise You for Your mercy toward us. We come before You today to offer You prayers of contrition for our sins.
Whenever we sin against You, You are ready to offer Your forgiveness to us. As we repent for our offenses against You, it is important that we resolve to avoid sinning against You in this way again. You can help us to grow in the firm purpose of amendment we need to advance in holiness and be truly contrite.

In our fallen world, there are many ways we offend You through sin in our lives. You have mercifully provided us a sacrament for the forgiveness of our sins. We should make frequent use of the sacrament of confession in our lives, and we should be deeply grateful to You for giving us this gift.

You created each of us to spend eternity with You in heaven. There are many ways we might go astray from You and sin against You during our lives, but You call us to keep in mind our final judgment and the hope of spending eternity with You in heaven.

You call each one of us to repent and to come to You in contrition each time we fall into sin. In our fallen human nature, repentance can at times be difficult for us. But You can help us to grow in the humility we need for true contrition.

Help us always love You above all other things in our lives. Give us the grace to devote ourselves more fully to You each day of our lives.

Dear Lord, we thank You for forgiving our sins, and we praise You for Your mercy toward us. We come before You today to offer You prayers of contrition for our sins.
We know that we can never deserve the great mercy You show to us when You forgive us our sins. Though we offend You more deeply than we can ever fully understand when we sin against You, You continue to forgive us. We should deeply appreciate the gift of Your forgiveness in our lives.
