About Our Lady of China
During the Boxer Rebellion that occurred in China from 1899-1901, a small Christian village called Donglu was attacked by soldiers. It is believed that Our Lady appeared in Donglu to chase away the soldiers.
In the apparition, the Blessed Virgin was seen wearing white. With her was a fiery horseman who was believed to be St. Michael the Archangel.
After this apparition, the village priest hired a painter from Shanghai to create a statue of Mary. By 1924, Donglu had become a pilgrimage site. When the Shanghai Synod of Bishops in China closed in 1924, the apostolic chancellor and the other bishops of China consecrated the people of China to Our Lady of China.
In 1928, Pope Pius XI blessed the Donglu image and promulgated it. In 1941, Pope Pius XII added the feast day of Our Lady of China to the liturgical calendar. Later in 1973, the Holy See granted approval to the Chinese bishops’ conference to move the feast day to the vigil of Mother’s Day.
Though the statue in Donglu was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution in 1966, a canvas image of the Madonna and Child was painted in 1989. This image is currently enshrined at the Our Lady of Donglu parish.
The image was also reconstructed as a statue in Taiwan in 1976. This statue is now venerated at the National Shrine of Our Lady of China. In 2020, the archbishop of Taipei asked for a formal coronation of the image. Pope Francis granted a decree of pontifical coronation, and it was crowned in 2022.
In 1982, a shrine to Our Lady of China was established in the United States in Rockville, Maryland. A mosaic of Our Lady of China has also been displayed at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, since 2002.
For the past fifty years, the image of Our Lady of China has been well known among Chinese Catholics because it appears on a prayer card for the persecuted Church in China. The first Chinese cardinal, Cardinal Thomas Tien Keng-Hsin, SVD, promoted the prayer card in the United States and Canada.
The prayer on the prayer card reads, “Almighty and eternal God, comforter of the afflicted, and strength of the suffering, grant that our brothers of China who share our faith may obtain, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and our holy martyrs, peace in Thy service, strength in time of trial, and grace to glorify Thee, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.”
