Show HideOur Lady of Confidence is a title given to Mary. This title comes from an image of Madonna and Child that is enshrined in the Lateran Basilica in Rome. Devotion to Our Lady under this title began in Italy.
The intercession of Our Lady of Confidence has brought about many favors and miracles. You can use this novena to seek intercession from Our Lady of Confidence in many aspects of your life.
About Our Lady of Confidence Novena
The image of Our Lady of Confidence was first painted by an Italian painter named Carlo Maratta, who lived in the 1600s-1700s.
The painting was made in the Renaissance style, showing Mary with hazel eyes, auburn hair, and a light complexion in accord with beauty standards of the time and region. Our Lady appears serene, and she holds her Child. The Christ Child has a noble appearance and points at His mother.
It is believed that Carlo Maratta gave this painting to a noblewoman who later became the abbess of a Poor Clare convent in Todi, Italy.
The abbess, Sister Clara Isabel Fornari, reached heights of great holiness and practiced severe penances. God granted her many mystical experiences, including the wounds of Jesus on her body as a stigmata.
Sister Clara Isabel was devoted to Our Lady of Confidence and was very attached to the image of Mary with her Divine Child. In one of her mystical experiences, Our Lady promised Sister Clara Isabel that all who venerate the image of Our Lady of Confidence be granted special graces.
Many cures and conversions were eventually obtained for people who venerated the image of Our Lady of Confidence. Artists made copies of the original Our Lady of Confidence image. One of these copies was put into the chapel of St. Mary’s Seminary at the Lateran Basilica in Rome.
The seminarians of St. Mary’s Seminary grew in devotion to Our Lady of Confidence as they found their prayers answered by her assistance many times. When the Asiatic flu brought death to many people in Rome in 1837, the seminarians were all spared. They credited the intercession of Our Lady of Confidence for their protection.
Shortly after, the seminarians of St. Mary’s Seminary requested a canonical coronation for the image. Pope Gregory the XVI granted this request in 1838.
During World War I, more than one hundred seminarians from St. Mary’s Seminary were forced into military service by the Italian government. The seminarians put themselves under the protection of Our Lady of Confidence, and all of them made it home safely. In thanksgiving for this protection, the seminarians crowned the image.
St. Pius X was very devoted to Our Lady of Confidence. St. John Paul II was also devoted to Our Lady of Confidence. He began the tradition of venerating the image of Our Lady of Confidence every year. Pope Benedict XVI continued this papal tradition.

Our Lady of Confidence does not have an official patronage, but you can seek her intercession in many circumstances. If you are a seminarian at St. Mary’s Seminary, you can use this novena to ask for her prayers. Or you can pray this novena to seek her intercession for someone you know who is a seminarian at St. Mary’s Seminary.
Since Our Lady of Confidence’s intercession has protected people in times of widespread illness and war, you can use this novena to ask her to pray for your protection from illness around you or from the dangers of war. Or you can pray the Our Lady of Confidence Novena to ask her to pray for protection for someone you know who is in danger from illness or war.

Our Lady of Confidence Novena - Day 1

Dear Lord, we thank You and praise You for giving us Your mother to be our intercessor. Please hear the prayers of Our Lady of Confidence on our behalf.
Our Lady of Confidence, the seminarians of St. Mary’s Seminary had a great devotion to you. When many around them died from the ravages of the Asiatic flu, your prayers kept them safe and they credited your intercession for their protection.
We ask you to bring all of our prayers before the throne of your Son, and we particularly ask today that you protect us and all people from the dangers of disease.
Pray for us, that we may always turn to your powerful intercession for our needs. Pray that we may grow in holiness and virtue at every opportunity God gives us.
