Our Lady of Knock appeared to a group of Irish villagers in Knock, County Mayo, Ireland on August 21, 1879. It is the only apparition where Our Lady did not say anything, yet appeared with others -- in Knock, she appeared with St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist.
The villagers built a Basilica on the location of her apparition, and it has become a pilgrimage site where thousands come to ask for Our Lady’s intercession and healing each year.

About Our Lady of Knock
On August 21, 1879, Our Lady of Knock appeared to about 15 Irish villagers of all ages in an apparition that lasted about two hours.
Knock is a small village in County Mayo, Ireland. In the decades prior, Ireland had suffered greatly from turmoil and famine. In fact, a famine was occurring during the apparition in western Ireland where Knock is located.
August 21 of 1879 was a rainy evening. Mary appeared on the gable wall of the parish Church, along with St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist. In addition, there appeared a lamb before a cross, on an altar and encircled by angels -- the lamb clearly symbolizing Jesus.
The apparition lasted for about two hours during which Mary nor the others she appeared with said nothing. Despite the pouring rain, the gable wall where Mary appeared remained dry. The villagers watched, praying the rosary. The youngest witness was a 5 year old boy named John Curry, who was later one of 15 people to give official testimonies as the apparition was being verified.
Less than two weeks later, a miracle occurred in Knock when a 12 year old girl was healed of severe pain and complete deafness in her ear. From that point on, devotion to Our Lady of Knock grew and became more popular and pronounced, and more healings occurred.
The apparition was approved by Rome in 1879, and it became a popular pilgrimage site soon after. A new basilica was built on the spot of the apparition in 1976, and now over 1.5 million pilgrims visit the Shrine each year. There have been over 600 documented miracles at the shrine. Our Lady of Knock continues to be a beacon of hope and faith for the Catholics of Ireland and those around the world.

One of the first miracles to bring recognition and verification to the Our Lady of Knock apparition was the healing of a 12 year old girl of complete deafness and severe ear pain. Our Lady of Knock, please pray for the sick and those who care for them. The sick, especially the elderly, are often forgotten -- pray that they may be loved and comforted by their caregivers and the peace of Christ. Pray that caregivers and healthcare workers may be given endurance and perseverance in caring for their patients. Help us to also be quick and willing to offer spiritual works of mercy to those we encounter facing spiritual sickness, poverty, or loneliness.
