About Our Lady of Montserrat
Our Lady of Montserrat is a thirty-eight inch statue of Mary holding the Christ Child. The statue is also called La Moreneta, which means “The Little Dark-Skinned One.” Both Mary and Jesus are depicted with dark skin in the image.
Some think that this statue was made in the early days of the Church in Jerusalem. However, it is more likely that the image was made much later.
The image resembles the Byzantine form, and it is painted in a variety of colors. The bodies of Mary and Jesus appear thin, and their faces are elongated. In Our Lady’s right hand, she holds an orb. The Christ Child raises His hand in blessing.
One account holds that the image of Our Lady of Montserrat was moved to avoid danger from the Saracens who were invading in 718. One legend says that Benedictine monks were unable to move the statue to build their monastery, so they instead built the chapel of Santa Maria de Montserrat around it.
Around the year 1203, St. Peter Nolasco made a pilgrimage to venerate the image of Our Lady of Montserrat. After this pilgrimage, he traveled to Barcelona and began many charitable works.
During this time, St. Peter Nolasco began to be very concerned with the sufferings of Christians who were being captured by the Moors in raids. So he decided to establish a religious order called the Royal, Celestial and Military Order of Our Lady of Mercy and the Redemption of the Captives, or the Merecedarians. Their work was caring for the needs of these captured Christians.
St. Ignatius of Loyola is also associated with our Lady of Montserrat. After he recovered from the battle wounds that led to his conversion in 1522, he traveled to the Monastery of Montserrat. There, he laid down his arms at the foot of the Our Lady of Montserrat image.
There is also a hymn to Our Lady of Montserrat. It is called “El Virolai.” The hymn begins, “Rose of April, dark-skinned lady of the mountain.” Because of this hymn, Our Lady of Montserrat is sometimes referred to as “Rosa d’abril.”
In 1881, Pope Leo XIII granted a canonical coronation to the image of Our Lady of Montserrat. The statue of Our Lady of Montserrat is one of the most famous images in Spain. A copy of the image that was made in the 18th century is currently displayed in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Since Pope Benedict XVI’s pontificate, the image has been on display for papal Masses.
