About Our Lady of Velankanni
The title of Our Lady of Velankanni originated when Mary appeared and brought help to people on multiple occasions in the town of Velankanni, India.
Though there is little written history of the Marian apparitions in Velankanni, tradition says that Mary first appeared in the town in the 1500s to a young boy.
The boy was going to deliver buttermilk to someone a great distance away. When he paused in his journey to rest in the shade, a woman appeared to him. She was holding a Child. She asked the boy to give her some of his buttermilk so she could feed it to her Child. The boy gave her some, and the Child drank it. When the boy arrived at his destination, he and his customer were astonished to see that the container was completely full once again.
A few years after this apparition, a different boy was working to sell buttermilk to people passing by. He was lame, and no one was stopping to buy from him. As he sought shade from the heat under a tree, a woman appeared to him with a Child. She asked him for a cup of buttermilk for her Child. He gave her a cup of it, and the Child drank it.
Then she asked the boy to go to the town of Nagapattinam. She instructed the boy to find a certain man there and to tell the man to build a chapel in her honor at Velankanni.
The boy was cured so thoroughly of his lameness that he ran to Nagapattinam to do as the woman had instructed him. The men of Nagapattinam built a chapel in honor of Our Lady of Good Health in Velankanni.
Then, near Velankanni in the 1600s, a group of Portuguese sailors in a merchant ship were caught in a terrible storm. They prayed to Mary, Star of the Sea, to help them. They promised her that they would build a chapel in her honor wherever they were able to land. The sea quickly became calm, and they were able to land near Velankanni on September 8th, the feast of Mary’s Nativity. To honor their promise, they renovated the thatched chapel that was already there. They rebuilt it into a stone church.
In 1962, St. John XXIII elevated the church in Velankanni to a minor basilica. In his apostolic brief on the matter, he noted that pilgrims had been traveling to the shrine for many years and that it is considered the “Lourdes of the East.”
