St. Aaron was a monk who lived in the 500s. He was most likely from the area that is now Britain. He was also an abbot for some time.

Though little information is known about St. Aaron, he gained a reputation for great holiness. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy monk in many aspects of your life.

About St. Aaron

St. Aaron’s date of birth is unknown, but it is thought that he was born sometime in the beginning of the sixth century. It is thought that his place of birth was one of the British Isles, possibly Wales. Nothing is known about his childhood or early life.

Aaron desired to devote his life totally to God, so he initially decided to live as a hermit. He chose hermitages in Lamalle and Pleumeur-Gautier. As a hermit, he enjoyed his life of solitude with God.

After his initial years of living as a hermit, Aaron moved to an island called Cezembre. This island was near Aleth in France. Cezembre later came to be known as St. Aaron’s Island. He chose this location particularly because the waters surrounding it made it impossible for anyone to travel to it except for during low tide. The tide was low enough for travel to or from the island only two times each day.

Aaron’s reputation for holiness grew. He came to be known especially for his piety and his wisdom. Despite the inconvenience of reaching the island, Cezembre became a place where many visitors came seeking guidance in their spiritual lives. As more people came to be guided by him, Aaron led the community in monastic living.

One of Aaron’s visitors was St. Malo. Aaron welcomed him with great hospitality. Aaron became a spiritual father to St. Malo. St. Malo was the most well known of Aaron’s many spiritual disciples, and St. Malo later became known for establishing a religious community in Brittany, France.

In 544, Aaron became abbot of the religious community in Cezembre. As abbot, Aaron ruled with great compassion. He brought many people to conversion through his teachings, and he baptized hundreds of converts to Christianity.

Though few historical details have survived, it is believed that Aaron faced many difficulties and hardships during his life on the island of Cezembre. He faced these hardships with great fortitude. Some of his writings survived and were preserved for many years.

Aaron died not long after he began his work as abbot. St. Malo succeeded him as abbot. St. Malo was also consecrated as the first bishop of Aleth. No details about Aaron’s death have survived to the present day.

The island of Cezembre continued to be named after St. Aaron until it came to be called St. Malo in 1150. There is presently a town named after St. Aaron in Lamballe, France.
