About St. Agabus

St. Agabus lived in the first century AD. Nothing is known for certain about his early life except that he was a Jew. He was one of the early converts to Christianity in the days of the Early Church.

Agabus is mentioned in Scripture, in the Acts of the Apostles 11:27-28. The passage says that Agabus was one of several prophets who went to Antioch from Jerusalem and that he prophesied about a severe famine that later occurred sometime between 41 and 54 AD.

It stated, “At that time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch, and one of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine all over the world, and it happened under Claudius.”

Acts 21:10-12 also mentions Agabus: “We had been there several days when a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. He came up to us, took Paul’s belt, bound his own feet and hands with it, and said, ‘Thus says the holy Spirit: This is the way the Jews will bind the owner of this belt in Jerusalem, and they will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”

When others heard Agabus’ message about what would happen to Paul, they begged Paul not to go to Jerusalem. But Paul was undeterred and determined to go to Jerusalem anyway. This meeting between Agabus and Paul has been dated around 58 AD.

Agabus’ symbolic action of binding his feet and hands with Paul’s belt has been compared to the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah, when the Lord told Jeremiah to buy and wear a linen waistband to symbolize how the Lord would bind Israel and the people of Judah to Him.

Though the material concerning Agabus in the Acts of the Apostles is the primary written source of information about him, Church Tradition also tells us that he worked as a missionary. Tradition holds that he taught and preached in many countries and that he converted many people.

In Jerusalem, Agabus’ work of preaching and converting led the Jews there to begin persecuting him. They arrested and tortured him. They put a rope around his neck and severely beat him. They then dragged him to a place outside of Jerusalem and stoned him to death. One theologian, a Jesuit named Anthony Maas, holds that Agabus was actually martyred in Antioch. The date of Agabus’ death is not known.

St. Agabus’ Feast Day: February 13th
