Show HideSt. Albert the Great was a priest who lived in Germany during the 1200s. He was a member of the Dominican religious order. He was made a Doctor of the Church.
St. Albert the Great did a lot of important work for the Church. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy priest in many aspects of your life.
About St. Albert the Great
St. Albert the Great was born around the year 1200 in Germany. Though we know very little about his family or his early life, we know that he had an excellent education.
As a young man, Albert studied philosophy at the University of Padua. His studies in the writings of Aristotle during this time laid the foundation for a lot of his later work in philosophy.
Around the year 1223, Albert received an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This experience greatly moved him. It helped lead him to enter the Dominican religious order.
He soon began studying theology. Before long, he started lecturing at Cologne and in other places as well. He gained great renown as a lecturer.
Around this time, Albert began to work with a well-known French theologian named Philip the Chancellor to write the Summa de Bono.
In 1245, Albert became the first German Dominican to earn a masters in theology. After this, he taught theology at the University of Paris and the College of St. James. He eventually taught St. Thomas Aquinas.
Albert continued studying the work of Aristotle. He wrote commentaries on almost everything that Aristotle wrote. During this time, he also studied the works of Muslim scholars on medicine and science.
Albert was elected provincial of the Dominicans in 1254. He led with great efficiency and capability. In 1259, he and several other Dominican leaders created a course of philosophy study for the order. This course of study later gave rise to the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, or the “Angelicum,” as it is called today.
In 1261, Pope Alexander IV took note of Albert’s many skills and made him bishop of Regensburg. Despite his high office, Albert walked everywhere and refused to ride a horse. After realizing that living as a bishop did not suit him well, Albert resigned in 1263.
After Albert resigned as bishop, the pope assigned him to preach to German-speaking people about the Eighth Crusade. In the later part of his life, Albert came to be known as an excellent mediator. He helped resolve conflicts between the people of Cologne and their bishop, as well as between individual people.
In 1274, Albert mourned the death of St. Thomas Aquinas. Albert spent some of his last years defending the important work of St. Thomas Aquinas. In 1278, Albert became ill. He died in 1280.
