About St. Andrew Avellino

St. Andrew Avellino was born in 1521 in Sicily. His name was originally Lancelotto. Little is known about his childhood or early life, except that he was devoted to practicing the virtue of chastity from the time he was a young man.

Lancelotto received his early education in Castronuovo. He then traveled to Venice to study humanities and philosophy. During this time, his commitment to chastity was tested because his handsome appearance attracted the attention of many female admirers. As a means of deterring these admirers, he had his hair cut into a tonsure.

Lancelotto then went to Naples to study law. When he was twenty-six years old, he was ordained to the priesthood. After being ordained, he served as a lawyer at the ecclesiastical court of Naples for some time.

On one occasion, Lancelotto told a lie while in the heat of an argument. When he saw a Scripture passage against lying shortly after, he was filled with remorse. He gave up his position as an ecclesiastical lawyer and began to devote himself to a life of prayer.

Not long after, the archbishop of Naples asked him to work on reforming a convent that had become lax and was a severe source of scandal. Lancelotto was able to reform the convent, but some immoral men who had been used to secretly meeting with the nuns there became angry at Lancelotto’s interference with their sin. So they attacked him and severely wounded him.

Lancelotto was taken to a Theatine monastery to heal from his attack. There, he decided to follow God’s call to enter the Theatines. He took the name of Andrew out of love for the cross. He was thirty-five years old when he entered the order.

Before long, Andrew was made novice master of the monastery. He served as novice master for ten years and was then elected superior. He led with humility and piety. He was also very zealous regarding strict religious discipline and the purity of the clergy.

The general of the Theatine order soon put two new Theatine houses under Andrew’s care. Andrew helped establish many new Theatine houses as well. He attracted many followers because of his eloquent preaching and prudent spiritual direction. Though he devoted a lot of time to preaching, hearing confessions, and visiting the sick, he was also able to write ascetical works.

When Andrew was eighty-eight years old, he suffered from apoplexy in the middle of celebrating Mass. Shortly after receiving Viaticum, he died a holy death.
