About St. Anthony of Padua

St. Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195 as Fernando Martins de Bulhoes. His parents were wealthy and were members of the nobility.

During Fernando’s childhood, he was educated at a nearby cathedral school. When Fernando was fifteen years old, he felt called to serve God in the religious life. He entered the Abbey of Santa Cruz in Coimbra. After Fernando was ordained a priest, he was made guest-master of the abbey, responsible for the abbey’s hospitality to visitors.

Before long, a group of Franciscans began living in a hermitage near Coimbra. Fernando felt called to leave the abbey and join them. He felt attracted to their simple way of life and their preaching. He eventually gained permission to leave the abbey. When he joined the Franciscans, he took the name Anthony.

Soon, Anthony traveled to Morocco to preach the Gospel. But he fell seriously ill, so he had to return to Portugal for recovery. On the return voyage, the ship blew off course. It landed in Sicily. Anthony and his party traveled to Tuscany. He spent time recovering his health in a hermitage in San Paolo. While recovering, Anthony devoted his time to prayer and study.

Around this time, a group of Dominican friars visited Anthony’s hermitage. The Franciscans thought that one of the Dominicans would preach a homily because they are known for their preaching. The Dominicans thought that one of the Franciscans would be preaching. Because of the confusion, Anthony was asked to preach at the last moment.

Though Anthony tried to object, he eventually agreed and was able to preach a very eloquent homily that impressed both the Franciscans and the Dominicans. News of his eloquence soon reached St. Francis of Assisi.

Francis and Anthony became good friends. Francis put Anthony in charge of the friars’ studies. As a teaching aid, Anthony made use of a book of Psalms that had many notes in it. On one occasion, a novice decided to leave the hermitage and took this valuable book with him. Anthony prayed that the book would be returned. The novice did return it and decided to rejoin the order as well.

Anthony sometimes taught in universities, but he devoted himself most to preaching. On one occasion when his audience of heretics refused to listen to his preaching, he went to a body of water and began to preach to the fish. When the fish miraculously began to gather, the heretics decided to listen to what he had to say.

Anthony died in 1231, when he was just 35 years old. Though his body decayed normally, the tongue that he used to preach so eloquently remained incorrupt.
