About St. Bede the Venerable

St. Bede the Venerable was born around the year 673 in the area that is now England.

When Bede was very young, his parents sent him to be educated at a Benedictine monastery under St. Benedict Biscop. Bede later returned to the monastery to study further under an abbot named Ceolfrid. During this time, Bede studied theology, Scripture, sacred music, Greek, and poetry.

Ceolfrid and the other monks recognized Bede’s holiness and devotion. Though Bede was only nineteen years old, Ceolfrid ordained him as a deacon.

After being ordained a deacon, Bede studied for the priesthood for eleven more years. He was ordained when he was thirty years old. After his ordination, he celebrated Mass for the Benedictine monastery each day. He spent the rest of his time baking, farming, and doing other work around the monastery.

Bede was very devoted to his prayer life. He also fasted regularly and made charitable works a priority. He viewed all work as valueless unless it was rooted in love of God and neighbor.

Bede was very intellectually gifted. He used his intellectual gifts to study many subjects. He turned down the opportunity to become abbott of his monastery, focusing his energy on writing instead. He wrote more than forty-five books on theology, Scripture, science, history, and literature.

Bede also taught at the monastery’s school. His reputation for brilliance spread, and he helped the monastery school gain great recognition throughout Britain. Many prominent people in British society made pilgrimages to his monastery and sought his guidance. Pope Sergius personally invited Bede to Rome. Bede’s writings on Scripture came to be viewed in such high regard that a Church council ordered them to be read in British churches.

Bede remained humble and unfazed by this great recognition and high honors. He chose to remain committed to monastic living and stayed in the monastery for most of his adult life. Despite this, his writings became so well known that he reached many people. His words were read over the following centuries by the Church. He was one of the last writers in the early Church to be considered one of the Church Fathers.

Despite Bede’s great achievements in learning and writing, he continued to view love, rather than learning, as his life’s purpose.

Bede died in 735 on the eve of the feast of Christ’s Ascension. In 1899, Pope Leo XIII named him a Doctor of the Church.
