About St. Camillus de Lellis

St. Camillus de Lellis was born in 1550 in Naples. When he was born, his mother was almost fifty years old. His father was an army officer and was not often home.

Camillus had a harsh temper as a child. As his mother aged, she became less able to control him. In 1562, Camillus’ mother died. The relatives who were supposed to care for him often neglected him.

When Camillus was sixteen years old, he joined the army and fought against the Turks. After Camillus served in the army for several years, he was injured and went to a hospital in Rome for treatment. Before long, he was forced to leave the hospital because he was so quarrelsome.

Camillus then gambled away his money and possessions. But he soon found work at a Capuchin friary in Manfredonia. During this time, he suffered from the unhealed wound in his leg. He continued to gamble and quarrel with others, but the prior of the friary saw Camillus’ good heart despite this.

In 1575, the prior’s preaching helped spur Camillus to a conversion. Camillus entered the Capuchin novitiate, but his unhealed leg wound prevented him from being accepted fully into the order.

After this, Camillus returned to the hospital in Rome. He worked as a caregiver to pay for his lodging there. During this time, he began to live a very penitential life. St. Philip Neri became his confessor and spiritual director.

Camillus was soon made the superintendent of the hospital. He began to see that the sick in the hospital often received poor attention from the hospital’s workers. To remedy this problem, Camillus asked some holy men to serve God through caring for the sick in the hospital.

Before long, Camillus began to feel that God was calling him to establish a religious order and to become a priest. St. Philip Neri approved of this plan.

When Camillus was thirty-four years old, he was ordained to the priesthood. Camillus then established the Order of Clerks Regular, Ministers of the Infirm. This order was also known as the Camillians. His order devoted itself largely to giving medical care to soldiers on the battlefield. The order was officially approved by the Church in 1586.

Camillus continually suffered from his leg injury for the rest of his life, but he did not allow it to hinder his ministry. It is believed that he had the gift of prophecy and healing. His order spread throughout Italy and other countries. He fell ill and died in 1614.
