St. Clement of Rome Novena
Contents
Show HideClement was also the man mentioned by St. Paul in Philippians 4:3. In this passage, Paul called Clement a “fellow laborer in Christ.”
The Liber Pontificalis also says that Clement wrote two letters, though later sources debate whether the second letter was actually written by him. The First Epistle of Clement, or 1 Clement as it is often called, was written to the Corinthian Christian community. Besides the writings of the New Testament, it is the earliest Christian document.
1 Clement shows important information about the history of the Church and the ministry of early Christians. In the letter, Clement addresses a situation in which Church members had deposed their bishops. He tells them to reinstate their bishops and to repent. He calls them to submit to Church authority and to maintain order within the Church.
He wrote, “We should be obedient unto God, rather than follow those who in arrogance and unruliness have set themselves up as leaders in abominable jealousy. . . . For Christ is with them that are lowly of mind, not with them that exalt themselves over the flock.”
He also wrote in the letter about the hope of eternal life for those who follow God: “Do we then think it to be a great and marvelous thing, if the Creator of the universe shall bring about the resurrection of them that have served Him with holiness in the assurance of a good faith, seeing that He showeth to us even by a bird the magnificence of His promise?”
Clement’s letter also mentions the martyrdom of St. Peter and the persecution of other Christians. It mentions St. Paul traveling to Spain as well.
It is believed that Clement was exiled from Rome when Emperor Trajan was reigning. Clement was sent to work in a rock quarry with many pagan prisoners. Tradition holds that God worked a miracle through Clement there, providing water out of the ground for the thirsty prisoners. The miracle caused many to convert to Christianity. As punishment for this, Clement was killed by being tied to an anchor and thrown into the sea.
