About St. Cristobal Magallanes

St. Cristobal Magallanes was born in 1869 in Mexico. His parents were farmers. During his childhood, he worked as a shepherd.

When Cristobal was nineteen years old, he entered the Conciliar Seminary of San Jose in Guadalajara.

In 1899 when Cristobal was thirty years old, he was ordained to the priesthood. He was assigned to serve as chaplain at the School of Arts and Works of the Holy Spirit in Guadalajara. After this, he was assigned as pastor of the parish in his hometown of Totatiche.

During his time as a parish priest in Totatiche, Cristobal helped establish schools. He also helped plan for the Dam of La Candelaria and other hydrological works. He assisted in setting up carpentry shops as well.

Cristobal felt called to evangelize the native Huichol people. He did a lot of evangelization work among them. He also played an important role in the establishment of a mission in an indigenous town called Azqueltan.

In 1914, the Mexican government decreed the closing of the seminary in Guadalajara. Cristobal volunteered to run a secret seminary in his parish. The following year, he began operating the Auxiliary Seminary of Totatiche.

Within one year, the seminary had seventeen students. Before long, the archbishop of Guadalajara officially recognized the seminary. He appointed two teachers and a precept to the seminary.

During this time, the government of Mexico became increasingly anti-Catholic. The government created and enforced laws against the Church, seeking to force the Catholic faith out of Mexico. In response to this persecution, some Catholics rose up in rebellion against the laws. They came to be called “Cristeros.”

As some Catholics began to violently oppose the government persecution, Cristobal wrote and preached against the use of violence. Despite this, the government falsely accused him of promoting an armed rebellion. In 1927, Cristobal was arrested while traveling to a farm to celebrate Mass.

Without a trial, Cristobal was sentenced to be executed. For four days, he was kept in a cell. He gave the few possessions he had to his executioners. His last words were spoken in his cell before he was executed: “I am innocent and I die innocent. I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death, and I ask God that the shedding of my blood serve the peace of our divided Mexico.”

Cristobal was canonized by St. John Paul II in 2000.
