About St. Elizabeth of the Trinity

St. Elizabeth of the Trinity was born in 1880 in Cher, France. She was the firstborn of her parents. Her only sibling was one younger sister. Her father was in the military.

When Elizabeth was seven years old, her father died suddenly. Afterward, Elizabeth and her family moved to Dijon, France.

During her childhood, Elizabeth had a very bad temper. She often fought with her younger sister and fell into fits of rage. As Elizabeth prepared to make her first confession and receive her First Holy Communion, she worked to overcome her tendency to anger. She wished to rid herself of this fault in order to be more worthy to receive Jesus in Holy Communion. She sometimes worked so hard to avoid outbursts of anger that she would begin to cry from the effort of keeping her anger at bay.

With great effort and reliance on God’s grace, Elizabeth began to gain more self-control. She grew in love of God and in devotion to the Holy Trinity. Around this time, she also began singing in her parish’s choir, teaching religion to the children of factory workers, and visiting the sick.

As Elizabeth grew older, men began to ask for her hand in marriage. But she declined all offers of marriage she received. Her home in Dijon was only two hundred meters away from a Carmelite monastery. When she was seventeen, she made a visit there. The Mother Superior of the monastery gave her a circular letter version of what would later become St. Therese of Lisieux’s autobiography, The Story of a Soul.

As Elizabeth read about St. Therese, she began to understand more deeply what God was calling her to do. She knew that He wanted her to become a Carmelite nun.

Elizabeth’s mother was strongly opposed to her desire to enter religious life. She refused to give Elizabeth permission to enter until Elizabeth was twenty-one. This period of waiting was a great trial to Elizabeth, but she obediently submitted to her mother’s wishes. While waiting, she continued her good works in Dijon.

In 1901, Elizabeth was finally able to enter the monastery. During her time in the monastery, Elizabeth wrote many spiritual works, including a prayer called “O My God, Trinity Whom I Adore.” She also wrote a retreat for her younger sister called “Heaven in Faith” and a work called “Last Retreat” that consisted of spiritual insights she had gained at the last retreat she was able to make.

In 1906, at age twenty-six, Elizabeth died of Addison’s Disease. She suffered greatly as she was dying, but she accepted her suffering and considered it a gift from God. She was beatified in 1984 and canonized in 2016.
