About St. Emily de Vialar

St. Emily de Vialar was born in 1797 in Gaillac, France. Her father was a doctor. She eventually had two younger siblings.

Emily’s childhood was during a time of great turmoil for Catholics in France because of the French Revolution. The year she was born, French troops took Pope Pius VI prisoner. Her parents had her baptized in secret. When Emily was still very young, her mother taught her to read.

When Emily was thirteen years old, her mother took her to a college in Paris that was for young ladies of the upper class. During the journey to the school, Emily’s mother became very ill. Though Emily’s father did all he could for his wife, Emily’s mother died.

When Emily was fifteen years old, she left school and returned to her home to live with her father and brothers. During Emily’s time away, her grief-stricken father had surrendered care of their household to a strict servant named Toinon.

Emily felt moved to care for the poor and destitute. She even invited them to her home. This caused conflict and tension in Emily’s household. Conflict also arose because Emily did not wish to consider marrying.

As Emily continued her charitable works, other young women began to assist her in these efforts. For the next fifteen years, Emily devoted herself to caring for the poor and especially for children who had been neglected by their parents.

In 1832, Emily’s grandmother died and left her some money. Emily used this money to buy a house for herself and the companions who assisted in her charitable works.

Together with her three companions, Emily established a religious community called the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition. She was inspired by the Scripture passage of Matthew 1:20, which describes the angel appearing to St. Joseph to tell him that Mary was with child by the Holy Spirit.

One of Emily’s brothers, who lived in French Algeria, suggested that Emily open a hospital near Algiers. Emily and her companions opened schools and hospitals there, caring for the sick at a time of a cholera outbreak.

In 1835, Emily’s religious order was officially approved by the Church. She soon established hospitals in Beirut, Tripoli, and Cyprus. She also established one of the first Catholic schools in Malta. Throughout twenty-two years, Emily’s religious order grew from one house to forty.

Emily died in 1856. She was canonized in 1951.
