About St. Gabriel the Archangel
St. Gabriel the Archangel, one of the three archangels mentioned in Sacred Scripture, is often referred to as God's messenger. His name means "God is my strength," and he appears in key moments throughout salvation history, delivering divine messages of great importance.
The most well known of Gabriel’s appearances is in the Gospel of Luke, where he is sent to the Virgin Mary to announce the Incarnation of Christ. This moment, known as the Annunciation, holds a central place in Christian faith. Gabriel greets Mary with the words “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28) and proceeds to tell her that she will conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit and give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. This profound mission entrusted to Gabriel emphasizes his role as a heavenly messenger who is sent to reveal God's plan for the redemption of humanity. His words to Mary echo throughout history, reminding us of God’s closeness and His invitation to participate in His divine will.
Earlier in Scripture, Gabriel also plays a crucial role in the Book of Daniel. In Daniel 8:16, he is sent to the prophet to help him understand a vision regarding the future of Israel. Gabriel’s appearance in this Old Testament passage highlights his role as a guide and interpreter of divine mysteries. His ability to explain complex visions reveals his deep understanding of God’s will and his mission to help the faithful gain a deeper understanding of divine revelation. In another instance (Daniel 9:21-22), Gabriel appears to Daniel during prayer, offering insight into the coming of the Messiah and the redemption of Israel.
Additionally, Gabriel’s message to Zechariah in the Gospel of Luke is significant. He announces to the elderly priest that his wife, Elizabeth, will bear a son, John the Baptist, despite her barrenness and advanced age. Gabriel’s message to Zechariah, though initially met with disbelief, reveals God's mercy and His ability to bring about the impossible in the lives of His people.
