Show HideSt. Genevieve was a French saint who lived in the 400s-500s. She spent a lot of her life devoted to prayer and penance. During her lifetime, miracles occurred which were attributed to her intercession. She was also considered responsible for helping save Paris from Attila the Hun through her prayers.
You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy woman in your life!
About St. Genevieve
St. Genevieve was born in 422 to French peasant parents. When Genevieve was seven, the bishop St. Germanous visited her town. Genevieve and her parents gathered with many others to receive his blessing, and St. Germanous foretold that she would be very holy.
Immediately after this, Genevieve asked St. Germanous to bring her to the church and consecrate her to God as a virgin. When asked the next day if she remembered her promises to God, Genevieve said that she did and that she would always be faithful to them.
Soon after, Genevieve began devoting herself to prayer and penance. When she was fifteen years old, she asked the bishop of Paris permission to become a nun. She also increased her penitential practices and began eating only twice per week.
After Genevieve’s parents died, she went to live with her grandmother. During this time, Genevieve also traveled and shared her Faith with others. She performed many acts of charity. She also performed miracles and even prophesied. Additionally, Genevieve often had visions of angels and saints.
When Genevieve told others of these holy experiences, people began to accuse her of being a false visionary. At one point, there was even a plot to kill her. But St. Germanous intervened and protected her. He silenced those who were hurling accusations at her and he managed to halt her persecutors.
Soon, the bishop appointed Genevieve to oversee the welfare of consecrated virgins. She carried out this task with great devotion and worked to bring them to a deeper and more holy relationship with Jesus.
Genevieve also had great influence over some of the worldly leaders of society. She was able to influence the pagan King Childeric of Gaul to spare the lives of many prisoners. She also influenced King Clovis to free many of his prisoners.
In 451 when Attila the Hun approached Paris with his army, the Christians of Paris planned to flee. But Genevieve convinced them to stay in their homes fasting and praying. She told them that God would protect them. Her assurance came true when Attila suddenly changed his course and did not go to Paris at all.
Genevieve died in 512 when she was eighty-nine years old. After her death, many miracles were attributed to her intercession, including the miraculous cessation of a terrible illness in Paris in 1129. When her shrine was carried through Paris, many were miraculously healed and no more people contracted the illness.

Why Pray the St. Genevieve Novena?
St. Genevieve is the patron saint of Paris. You can seek her intercession if you live in Paris or if you plan to travel to Paris. You can also ask her to pray for someone you know who lives in Paris or who is planning to travel to Paris.
Additionally, St. Genevieve is a great saint to seek intercession from on behalf of political leaders, since she had great influence on some of the political leaders around her. You can ask her to pray for a leader in your country, or for a leader in another country.

St. Genevieve Novena - Day 1
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us St. Genevieve as an example of holiness. Help us to imitate the love of You she showed from the time she began on the path to holiness during her early life with her family.
St. Genevieve, your holiness was foretold by the bishop St. Germanous when you were only a young girl. Despite your young age, you ardently longed to serve God with great devotion.
Please bring my petitions before God Whom you longed to serve!
You asked St. Germanous to consecrate you to God as a virgin. When you were asked the next day if you remembered your promises to God, you declared that you would always be faithful to them.
Pray for me, that I may strive for holiness as ardently as you did! Pray that I may seek to serve God with wholehearted devotion.

St. Genevieve, you were only seven years old when St. Germanous foretold that you would be very holy. Though you were very young, you were determined to consecrate yourself to God and to serve Him faithfully.
Please bring my petitions before God Whom you served so faithfully!
As a young child, you chose to consecrate yourself to God as a virgin. Then, you devoted yourself to prayer and penance. You did all you could to grow in holiness throughout your childhood.
Pray for me, that I may grow in holiness each day. Pray that I do all I can to serve God more faithfully at every opportunity.

You devoted yourself to prayer and began many penitential practices in the years that followed. When you were fifteen, you asked for permission to become a nun.

St. Genevieve, you longed to consecrate yourself to God as a virgin when you were just seven years old. With the help of the holy bishop, St. Germanous, you embarked on a life of prayer and devoted service to God.

Later in your life, you became the victim of evil plots against your life. St. Germanous intervened and protected you from those who were plotting against you. Though others were persecuting you on account of your holiness, he managed to halt your persecutors.
Pray for me, that I may never allow trials to hinder me from serving God. Pray that I may persevere in seeking holiness, no matter how difficult it might be.

St. Genevieve, you strove for great holiness from the time you were a young girl. When you began having mystical experiences, you were accused of being a false visionary. Despite this trial, you persevered in seeking to serve God.
Please persevere in bringing my petitions before the throne of God!
You began to suffer persecution because of your Faith and your holiness. Even when others plotted to kill you, you never wavered in your commitment to God and to your Faith.
Pray for me, that I may persevere in my Faith amidst all obstacles. Pray that may never weary of serving God, no matter how difficult it might be.

Through your trusting prayers, you were able to save Paris from a vicious attack. Your great faith and trust in God helped you to bring a holy influence to worldly affairs.
Pray for me, that I may trustingly place my needs and the needs of others in God’s hands. Pray that I may work whenever possible to influence society around me towards holiness.

When Attila the Hun prepared to attack Paris, you told the people of Paris to fast and pray. You told them that God would protect them, and you placed your trust in Him. God rewarded this trust by protecting the city from attack.
Pray for me, that I may grow in trust in God each day. Pray that I may trust God as actively and deeply as you did.
