About St. George
St. George’s year of birth is not known for certain. His parents were Christians and were members of the nobility. They raised George to practice the Catholic faith.
When George was a young man, he became a member of the Roman army. In his late twenties, he began to serve Emperor Diocletian as an Imperial Guard.
There are many legends about St. George slaying a dragon, though it could have been a crocodile. It is believed that this took place in modern-day Libya.
Legend holds that the people of a town in this region were unable to draw water because a dragon had nested there. They were able to get the dragon to leave its nest briefly each day by offering it a sheep. But when the sheep had all been offered, the people decided to offer the dragon a maiden.
The townspeople used straws to determine which maiden should be sacrificed. When the princess’ straw was drawn, her father begged for her life to be spared. But the townspeople would not agree.
Just as the dragon was about to eat the princess, George arrived. He made the Sign of the Cross for protection and then slayed the dragon. After George slayed the dragon, the townspeople converted from paganism to Christianity.
In 303, Emperor Diocletian announced the beginning of his persecution of Christians. He demanded that every soldier in his army offer a sacrifice to pagan gods, and he ordered that all Christians be arrested.
George refused to obey these orders. When he told Diocletian that he would not follow the command, Diocletian was angry. But because Diocletian valued a friendship with George’s father, he did not immediately take action against George.
Before long and in front of his peers, George announced his beliefs and his intention to disobey this order. Diocletian still did not want to execute George, so he attempted to persuade him to abandon his faith. Diocletian offered George many things, including money, slaves, and land if he would offer a sacrifice to the gods. But George refused and held fast to his faith.
Diocletian finally gave up his attempts to make George abandon his Christian faith. He ordered that George be tortured and killed.
As George prepared himself for death, he gave his money to the poor. He was tortured by being cut with swords while on a wheel. Despite this suffering, he remained steadfast in his faith. He was eventually killed by beheading.
