About St. Gertrude the Great
St. Gertrude the Great was born in 1256 on the feast of the Epiphany.
Very little is known with certainty about Gertrude’s early life, except that she entered a school at a Cistercian monastery when she was four years old. It is not known whether Gertrude was an orphan or if her parents sent her to this monastery to be formed as a lay oblate.
While in the monastery school, the Abbess Gertrude of Hackerborn was in charge of Gertrude’s upbringing. The abbess’ younger sister, St. Mechtilde, became close friends with Gertrude and grew to have great influence over her.
Gertrude’s education covered a wide range of subjects. Her own writings show that she was well-educated in many areas, including Latin, rhetoric, Scripture study, and the writings of the Church Fathers.
Gertrude also grew in social graces. She was seen as having a charming personality and was able to win others over easily.
Gertrude eventually decided to become a nun and entered the Benedictine order at Helfta.
When Gertrude was twenty-five years old, she began having mystical visions. These visions, which would continue until her death, had such a great influence on her life that she considered their beginning as her second birth. She felt this so deeply that she later wrote, “Until the age of 25, I was a blind and insane woman.”
After these visions began, Gertrude’s focus in all areas of her life turned more deeply to spiritual things. She devoted herself more to theological study and writings. She began writing with the spiritual benefit of others in mind.
Gertrude also practiced charity towards the poor. She felt great solidarity for the suffering souls in purgatory.
Gertrude would come to be recognized as one of the greatest mystics of the thirteenth century. She and her dear friend, St. Mechtilde, both practiced nuptial mysticism. This means they saw themselves as brides of Christ in their spiritual lives.
When Abbess Gertrude died in 1291, Gertrude assisted at her deathbed and mourned her loss deeply. Then, after St. Mechtilde died in 1298, Gertrude’s health began to deteriorate. She died in 1301.
Few of Gertrude’s many writings are still in existence today. One of her most famous surviving works is The Herald of Divine Love. The second book of this work, written solely by Gertrude, describes her veneration of Jesus’ Heart and her visions surrounding His Heart.
Pope Benedict XIV gave St. Gertrude the title, “the Great.” She is the only female saint to be given this title.
St. Gertrude the Great’s Feast Day: November 16th
