About St. Gregory of Nyssa

St. Gregory of Nyssa was born around the year 335 in the area that is now Turkey. He was raised in a pious Christian family, and both of his parents became saints. His older brother was St. Basil.

Gregory was a very strong student during his youth. He became a professor of rhetoric as a young man. It is also believed that Gregory was married when he was young. A letter of condolence addressed to him from St. Gregory Nazianzen suggests that Gregory of Nyssa’s wife may have died.

Before long, Gregory began studying for the priesthood. He was ordained to the priesthood then was later ordained as bishop of Nyssa in 372. The Church was fighting the Arian heresy at the time, and Gregory faced many difficulties as bishop. In 373, the bishop of Iconium had to assist him in dealing with discontent among the people of Nyssa.

Shortly after this, Gregory was falsely accused of embezzling Church funds. He was arrested by the emperor’s troops but was able to escape. It is not known for certain where Gregory went after escaping, but is likely that he wandered from town to town for a time.

In 376, the Synod of Nyssa deposed Gregory. The emperor died in 378, and it is likely that the new emperor’s amnesty policy was responsible for Gregory being able to return to his see. Gregory’s people were very joyful at his return.

Gregory worked to help solve various Church conflicts, including the Meletian Schism. He assisted in dealing with this schism at the Council of Antioch. He also worked to combat the Arian heresy.

Gregory’s work reached new heights after the death of his brother, Basil. His writing against Arianism and other unsound teachings earned him a strong reputation as a defender of true Church teachings.

Gregory was also sent to work on combating other heresies in addition to Arianism. At the Council of Constantinople in 383, Gregory held a prominent position. Gregory’s theological writings made great contributions to Church teachings on the Trinity.

Gregory died around the year 394. The cause of his death is not known. Over the centuries, his reputation began to diminish as the authorship of his works became less certain. Modern scholars have been able to reestablish his authorship, and Gregory is recognized for his great contributions to the spirituality and teachings of the Church.
