About St. Hildegard of Bingen
St. Hildegard of Bingen was born around the year 1098 in the area that is now Germany. Her family was wealthy, and she had several older siblings.
From infancy, Hildegard was in fragile health. She had a minimal education, and her family members often ignored her. During her hours of solitude as a child, she began to develop a deep spiritual life. She had an exceptional understanding of God’s love from the time she was very young.
When Hildegard was about three years old, she began to receive mystical visions, but she did not fully understand what she was experiencing. By the time she was five years old, she understood that she was receiving visions from God.
When Hildegard was a teenager, she was sent to a Benedictine abbey to complete her education. Before long, she followed God’s call to serve Him as a Benedictine nun.
During her years as a nun, Hildegard accomplished many things. She had a deep hunger for knowledge and studied many different subjects. She became one of the most brilliant minds of the time.
Hildegard wrote many poems, books, and hymns. She composed more chants that survived to modern times than any other Middle Age composer.
She recorded her visions, wrote on the lives of the saints, and wrote works of Scriptural analysis. She also analysed the writings of the Church Fathers, wrote plays, and wrote medicinal treatises. She performed scientific research and observation that was groundbreaking for her time.
As Hildegard grew in her faith and her deep mystical life, her reputation spread. Many visitors to the monastery sought wisdom from her. She treated each person she encountered as if they were Christ, and her deep love of God shone forth in all of her actions. She remained pious and humble throughout her life.
Hildegard was also a gifted teacher. This led her to travel and speak to large crowds of people. She also wrote many instructional letters from inside the convent. She answered others’ theological questions, fought against heretical teachings, spoke out against simony within the Church, and confronted leaders who challenged the pope’s authority.
Hildegard was eventually made abbess of her monastery. As abbess, she was a strong administrator. She was also able to establish two additional Benedictine convents.
Hildegard died in 1179, in her eighties. Pope Benedict XVI named her a Doctor of the Church in 2012.
