St. Hubert Novena

Show HideSt. Hubert was a bishop who lived in the 600s-700s. He was made the first bishop of Liege, in Belgium. He was also a student of St. Lambert.
St. Hubert is venerated as one of the Four Holy Marshalls, four saints who are especially venerated in the Rhineland and considered to be powerful intercessors. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this powerful saint in your life!
About Hubert
St. Hubert was born in the late 650s. His father was the Duke of Aquitaine, and Hubert was the eldest son.
During Hubert’s youth, his parents sent him to Paris to the court of Theuderic III. Hubert became known for his charm at court. He soon fled the court with several other nobles because of a tyrannical mayor of the palace. At the court of Pepin II in Austria, Hubert was welcomed and made grand-master of the household.
In 682, Hubert married the daughter of a count. The two of them soon had a son, but his wife died during childbirth. Hubert then left the court and began to devote himself to a life of hunting.
It was at this point in his life that Hubert underwent a spiritual conversion. Legend has it that on Good Friday morning, he was out hunting a stag while others were in churches for the Passion service. When the stag turned, he saw a crucifix between its antlers. Then he heard a voice telling him to repent and live a holy life if he wanted to avoid hell.
Hubert immediately got off his horse, prostrated himself, and asked God what he should do. The voice told him to go find Lambert and that Lambert would instruct him.
Hubert left for Maastricht, the city where Lambert was bishop. Lambert became his spiritual director. Hubert then renounced his fortune and his right to the dukedom. He gave away all of his wealth to the poor.
Hubert began studying for the priesthood. After he was ordained, St. Lambert made Hubert a chief assistant in the administration of the diocese. St. Lambert then suggested that Hubert make a pilgrimage to Rome. When Hubert returned from his pilgrimage, St. Lambert had been assassinated by a political enemy.
Hubert was then appointed bishop of Maastricht. As bishop, Hubert was known to distribute his salary to the poor. He also arranged for a cathedral to be built at the place where St. Lambert had been killed. Then, Hubert’s bishopric was transferred to Liege.
During this time, Hubert was also active in missionary efforts among the pagans in the nearby Ardennes forests and in Toxandria (an area of modern-day Belgium and the Netherlands).
Hubert died in 727 or 728. His death was said to have been a peaceful one. The abbey where he was eventually buried became a pilgrimage site until his coffin disappeared around the time of the Reformation.

Why Pray the St. Hubert Novena?
St. Hubert is the patron saint of hunters. You can seek his intercession if you are a hunter, or on behalf of a hunter whom you know.
St. Hubert is also the patron saint of mathematicians. You can ask him to pray for you if you are a mathematician, or if you are studying to become a mathematician. You can also ask him to pray for a mathematician you know.
Additionally, St Hubert is the patron saint of metalworkers. You can ask for his prayers if you are a metalworker. Or you can ask for his prayers on behalf of a metalworker whom you know.

St. Hubert Novena - Day 1

Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us St. Hubert as an example of holiness. Help us to imitate the devotion to You he began to grow in after the loss of his wife.
St. Hubert, you grew up immersed in courtly life and concerned with many worldly things. After the death of your wife, you became devoted to hunting. But you soon opened yourself up to God’s call in your life.
Please bring my petitions before the throne of God!
It is said that you heard a voice telling you to repent and to change your life, in order to avoid hell. You immediately set about devoting your life to God.
Pray for me, that I may be as eager to devote my life to God as you were. Pray that I may grow each day in my devotion to God.

St. Hubert, you were born a Catholic but you spent the early years of your life concerned almost solely with worldly matters. When God called you to repentance, you chose to serve Him eagerly.
Please bring my petitions before God Whom you served so eagerly!
Legend says that the voice you heard while hunting convinced you to radically change your life. You renounced your wealth and title, and you began studying the Faith under St. Lambert.
Pray for me, that I may continually repent and convert more deeply in my life. Pray that I may always respond to God’s call in my life.

Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us St. Hubert as an example of holiness. Help us to imitate the virtue he showed in responding immediately to Your call to conversion.
St. Hubert, it is said that you saw a crucifix in the antlers of a stag and heard a voice telling you to amend your life. When this occurred, you prostrated yourself and asked God what you should do.
Please bring my petitions before God Whom you sought to please!
After hearing the voice tell you to find St. Lambert, you immediately obeyed and asked St. Lambert to instruct you in the Faith. You renounced your material possessions and devoted yourself to God.
Pray for me, that I may always be open to God’s call in my life. Pray that I may always be ready to do whatever God asks of me.

St. Hubert, you renounced your fortune and your right to the dukedom shortly after your spiritual conversion. Though you had a lot of earthly power and wealth, you willingly gave them up in order to serve God more wholeheartedly.
Please bring my petitions before God Whom you served so wholeheartedly!
You studied for the priesthood under St. Lambert, and you eventually became a bishop. You spent the rest of your life in devoted service to God and His Church.
Pray for me, that I may be as unattached to worldly goods as you were. Pray that I may always place heavenly riches before the things of this world.

St. Hubert, legend says that you heard a voice telling you to reform your life and to seek out St. Lambert for holy instruction. You did not hesitate to obey this command, and you eagerly set out to follow God’s will for you.

You renounced your title and your worldly goods. Then, you began studying diligently for the priesthood under the instruction of St. Lambert. You devoted the rest of your life to God’s service.
Pray for me, that I may always be eager to deepen my knowledge of God. Pray that I may grow in my love of God each day.

After St. Lambert’s death, you were appointed bishop in his diocese. You served your people faithfully as their bishop for the rest of your life.
