St. Joanna was an Early Christian. She lived during and after the life of Christ. She is mentioned in the Gospels.

St. Joanna was a follower of Jesus. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy woman in many aspects of your life.

About St. Joanna

Nothing is known for certain about the early life of St. Joanna. As an adult, she was one of the holy women who accompanied Jesus and His disciples. She was married to a man named Chuza. Chuza managed the household of Herod Antipas. Scripture refers to Joanna as the wife of Chuza to distinguish her from other women with similar names.

Luke 8:1-3 mentions Joanna as one of the women whom Jesus cured. It also says that she was one of the women who accompanied Jesus and His disciples, providing for Him from her own supplies:

“Accompanying Him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.”

Luke 24:10 also mentions Joanna. It says that she accompanied Mary Magdalene and Mary of Clopas to take spices to Jesus’ tomb. These women then found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Matthew 28:8-10 says that Jesus appeared to this group of women and that He instructed them to tell the disciples to meet Him in Galilee.

Though the Gospels do not mention Joanna by name in the accounts of the Apostles in the upper room after Jesus’ death, it is commonly believed that she was with them. It is also believed that she was with the Apostles and other disciples when they chose Matthias as the successor of Judas and that she was with them during the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

Some scholars also hold that Joanna is mentioned in St. Paul’s letter to the Romans under another name. The name “Joanna” is a Jewish name, but the name “Junia” could have been the Roman version of the same name.

Romans 16:7 says, “Greet Andronicus and Junia, my relatives and my fellow prisoners; they are prominent among the apostles and they were in Christ before me.” Considering that St. Paul converted to Christianity around three years after the death and Resurrection of Jesus, the woman Paul refers to in this passage would have had to have been a Christian from very early on, as Joanna was.

Nothing is known for certain about the year or manner of Joanna’s death. She is venerated as a saint in Anglicanism and Lutheranism as well as Catholicism.

St. Joanna’s Feast Day: May 24th
