Show HideSt. John Francis Regis was a priest who lived in the 1500s-1600s. He lived in France. He was also a member of the Society of Jesus.
St. John Francis Regis did a lot of important works of charity during his life. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy priest in many aspects of your life.
About St. John Francis Regis
St. John Francis Regis was born in 1597 in southern France. His parents were members of the nobility.
During John’s youth, he was educated at a Jesuit college in Beziers. When John was nineteen years old, he entered the Jesuit religious order. He took his vows two years later.
After John completed his study of rhetoric, he was sent to teach grammar at three different colleges. During this time, he also studied philosophy.
In 1628, John began studying theology. He became very passionate about teaching the faith, preaching, and the work of saving souls. In 1630, he was ordained to the priesthood.
In 1631, John began work as a newly ordained priest. He worked tirelessly to minister to the sick during a bubonic plague outbreak in Toulouse.
Over the next two years, John devoted himself to several good works. He preached the Catholic faith to the poor and to children, worked for the conversion of the Huguenots, helped the needy, and visited the sick. He also built housing for women and orphans who were at risk. He helped prostitutes train to become lacemakers to provide them with income and make it easier for them to leave prostitution.
During this time, John also established the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. This was an organization through which the wealthy could give charitable donations of food and money to the poor.
In 1633, the bishop of Viviers invited John to the diocese of Viviers to preach missions. John spent the next seven years evangelizing in the area. He preached in more than fifty districts in Viviers. His style was known to be simple and direct. His simplicity of preaching often appealed to those who were not well educated and helped bring them to conversion.
Despite his simple preaching style, many in the Church mistook John’s boldness as arrogance. This led to a conflict with some other priests and with a bishop for a time. At one point, some people whose vices John had condemned threatened him with violence.
John longed to travel to Canada as a missionary to work for the conversion of the indigenous people there. However, he remained in France throughout his whole life.
Because of the many years of travel through cold, mountainous areas, John’s health became damaged. In 1640, when he was forty-three years old, he died of pneumonia. He was canonized by Pope Clement XII in 1737.
