About St. John Nepomucene
St. John Nepomucene was born around the year 1345 in a small town in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic).
Little is known about John’s childhood except that he suffered from a disease. His parents prayed for his cure, and John was cured. In thanksgiving for the cure, they dedicated John to God’s service.
John studied at the University of Prague and the University of Padua. He was then ordained to the priesthood and assigned to a parish in Prague.
During John’s years as a priest, he became a skilled preacher. Through his preaching, he helped bring thousands of people to conversion or to an amendment of life.
Before long, John was invited to King Wenceslaus IV’s court. During this time, John often performed charitable works for the poor. He also worked to settle many arguments that arose among the people.
While in the court of King Wenceslaus, John became confessor to the queen. The queen often suffered from the cruel treatment of King Wenceslaus. John helped the queen learn to bear this suffering patiently.
Because John was the queen’s confessor, sometime around the year 1393 King Wenceslaus attempted to get information about the queen from John. King Wenceslaus suspected that the queen had a secret lover, so he asked John to tell him what the queen had said in confession. But John refused to reveal this information because it would break the seal of confession. The king then had John put into prison.
King Wenceslaus asked John a second time to reveal what the queen had said in confession. He threatened death if John continued to refuse. The king also attempted to bribe John. He said that John would receive riches and honor if he obeyed the king’s commands.
When John refused a second time, the king had him tortured. John suffered greatly in many ways, including through the torture of having his sides burned with torches. Despite the torture, John held steadfast and refused to break the seal of confession.
The king then ordered John to be put into chains and marched through the city with a block of wood in his mouth. He had John thrown into the river. As John drowned, an unexplained brightness appeared on the water. The year of his death was 1393.
Devotion to St. John Nepomucene spread during the 17th century. He became a popular saint in Bohemia and in Catholic countries ruled by the Hapsburg family. Today, there are tens of thousands of statues of St. John Nepomucene.
