During St. John Paul II’s childhood, he began his journey to sainthood under the instruction of his father. John Paul II’s father, Karol Wojtyla Sr., instructed JPII in many aspects of the faith. He taught young Karol how to pray and encouraged him to pray to the Holy Spirit often.
John Paul II’s father gave him a prayer book with many prayers to the Holy Spirit. His father also taught him a specific prayer to the Holy Spirit, asking for the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
As a young man, John Paul II learned this prayer and said it daily. He would later attest that this powerful prayer for the gifts of the Holy Spirit led him to write an encyclical on the Holy Spirit.
As we pray this same novena that JPII prayed, let us offer our prayers that we may grow in all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit!
