St. Julian was a Western European saint who lived in the 4th century. Much of what is known about him comes from pious legend. He is often known as St. Julian the Hospitaler.

St. Julian did a lot of holy work serving others after repenting from a grave sin. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy penitent in many aspects of your life.

About St. Julian

St. Julian’s exact date of birth is not known for certain, but it is believed that he lived during the 4th century in Western Europe. His parents were members of the nobility.

According to legend, Julian’s father saw pagan witches put a curse on Julian the night Julian was born. The curse was supposed to make Julian one day kill his own parents. His father initially wanted to have him killed in order to avoid the fulfillment of this curse, but Julian’s mother would not let him.

As Julian grew older, his mother would often weep as she thought of the grave sin he was cursed to commit. When Julian learned the reason for her weeping, he resolved to never commit this terrible sin. To make sure of this, he courageously moved far away from his parents.

Julian walked for fifty days. When he reached Galicia in Spain, he settled there. He eventually married a rich widow and became a knight.

When Julian was around thirty years old, his parents decided to search for him. They prayed at a shrine of St. James the Great. Shortly after, they came upon Julian’s wife. Julian was away hunting, but his wife welcomed his parents into their castle. She gave his parents the bed that she and Julian slept in.

While Julian was hunting, a demonic vision told him that his wife was being unfaithful. Julian returned home, saw two people in his bed, and assumed it was his wife and a lover.

Enraged, Julian killed both people with his sword. When he learned the truth of what he had done, he was horrified. He vowed to spend the rest of his life doing charitable work in penance.

Julian and his wife made a pilgrimage to Rome. Then, they set up a residence for sick travelers near a river. Travelers often drowned while trying to cross the river, so Julian helped people cross.

Another legend says that the devil came disguised as a traveler and made a destructive mess inside Julian’s residence. Julian became so angry that he decided to make the travelers leave and not to take in any travelers again. Jesus soon appeared to him as a pilgrim, and Julian turned Him away. But when Julian recognized Him, he repented and returned to his charitable works.

The year and manner of Julian’s death are not known for certain, but legend holds that thieves killed Julian and his wife in the same manner that he had killed his parents.

St. Julian’s Feast Day: February 12th
