About St. Kevin

St. Kevin was born around the year 498 in Ireland. Few details are known about his life for certain, but tradition holds that he was born in Leinster and that his parents were descendants of royalty.

Tradition also holds that Kevin was baptized by St. Cronan. He was eventually educated by St. Petroc of Cornwall.

When Kevin was seven years old, his parents sent him to a monastery for his education. He remained under the care of the monks until he was grown.

As a young man, Kevin followed God’s call to serve Him as a priest. He was ordained to the priesthood and soon began to live as a hermit.

Kevin spent seven years as a hermit in the Valley of the Two Lakes in Glendalough. Eventually, a cattle farmer discovered him there and persuaded him to leave his solitary life.

Kevin then established a monastery at Disert-Coemgen. By this time, he had attracted many followers. They joined him in monastic living at the Disert-Coemgen monastery.

Before long, their community faced a food shortage. Kevin then moved the community to Glendalough at a spot where two sparkling rivers met. Many followers flocked to this new monastery there.

Kevin soon made a pilgrimage to Rome. There, he sought the pope’s blessing of the new religious community.

Legend holds that King Coleman of Faielan sent his infant son to be cared for by Kevin’s community. The king’s other sons had died in deaths that the king thought occurred from evil spirits. There were no cows in Glendalough from which Kevin could get milk for the baby, so he miraculously commanded a doe with a fawn to give her milk to the baby. The baby grew strong and healthy.

Kevin’s reputation as a holy monk and teacher spread. He became known as a soldier of Christ throughout Ireland and in other countries. Many people visited Glendalough to seek advice and spiritual guidance from him.

Despite Kevin’s reputation and fame, he lived in spirit as a pilgrim and hermit throughout his life. He continued to live a humble life filled with penance, prayer, and teaching. Throughout his lifetime, many great miracles were attributed to his intercession. He remained the superior of the Glendalough monastery until he died.

It is believed that Kevin lived to the age of one hundred twenty and died of natural causes around the year 618.

St. Kevin’s Feast Day: June 3rd
