St. Kiara was an Irish nun. It is believed that she lived during the 600s. She was also an abbess.

St. Kiara lived a life of great devotion to God. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy nun in many aspects of your life!

About St. Kiara

St. Kiara’s year of birth is not known for certain, but it is commonly believed that she was born in the early 600s. She has also been known by the names Ciera, Keira, and Keara, among other variations.

Very little is known for certain about Kiara’s birth, childhood, or early life. Nothing is known about her family, and it is not known if she was born as a Christian or became a Christian convert.

As an adult, Kiara chose to dedicate her life to God in the religious life. She gave up a life of marriage in order to follow God’s call to be a nun.

Legend holds that Kiara’s intercession helped extinguish a terrible fire in a town near her convent. When a fire broke out in Muscraig in Momonia, someone told the townspeople to seek prayers from Kiara. Some accounts hold that St. Brendan was the person who instructed the townspeople to seek her prayers, but the date of his death suggests that this was probably not the case.

The townspeople sent a representative to Kiara’s convent to ask her to pray for their town. Kiara prayed for the town and for the end of the fire. Almost immediately, the fire stopped.

Another legend holds that the monk St. Fintan heard about Kiara’s holiness. Fintan had previously attempted to join a monastery, but the abbot of that monastery told Fintan that Fintan’s vocation was to establish a monastery of his own. Fintan did this and then established other monasteries as well.

The monastery that Fintan established in Heli, Ireland, was very large. He soon learned that Kiara and the other nuns at her convent were living much more meagerly than he and his monks were. So he gave his monastery to Kiara and her nuns, while he and his monks moved to another monastery. He then blessed Kiara and asked her to name the monastery after St. Telle.

Kiara also established other convents. She established one called Killchree and served as abbess of this convent for many years. She led her convent with great faith and virtue.

In medieval times, some Franciscan friars established a monastery about a mile away from the former site of Kiara’s monastery and named it Franciscan Kilcrea Friary in honor of Kiara (the word “Kilcrea” means “cell of Kiara”).

Kiara died in the year 379 or 380. The cause of her death is not known.

St. Kiara’s Feast Day: October 16th
