About St. Laura
St. Laura’s date of birth is not known for certain, but it is believed that she was born in the early 9th century in Cordoba, Spain. Very little is known about Laura’s early life, except that she was probably from a noble family.
When Laura was a young woman, she married an important official. Some sources hold that she had two daughters from this marriage. After being married for about six years, her husband died.
At the time of Laura’s life, Muslim Moors ruled Spain. They controlled the land and imposed strict rules upon Christians in an attempt to suppress the Christian religion. Despite threats of punishment and death, some Christians in the area continued to faithfully practice the Christian faith.
Laura was one of these faithful Christians. After the death of her husband, she began to feel God calling her to serve Him in the religious life. Despite the danger of entering religious life, Laura chose to become a nun.
Before long, Laura became the abbess of her convent of Cuteclara. She courageously practiced her faith and led her convent in the midst of the dangers. Her holy commitment and devotion to God inspired other Christians as they faced the dangers of persecution for their faith.
Though Laura and her nuns practiced their faith in secret, the Muslim authorities eventually discovered their activity. The Muslim rulers saw her faithful practice of Christianity as a threat to their rule. In 864, they arrested Laura for the crime of practicing the Christian faith.
The Muslims took Laura before their rulers. They accused her of practicing the Christian faith and of spreading it to others.
Laura was treated very poorly by her captors. She endured great suffering and was threated with severe torture. Despite her suffering and the threats, Laura courageously refused to renounce her faith.
Probably because of her great courage, the Muslims sentenced her to death in an especially painful and gruesome manner. She was sentenced to be boiled alive.
Some accounts hold that Laura was boiled alive in a vat of lead, and other accounts say that she was boiled alive in a vat of pitch. Despite the intense suffering Laura endured, she courageously held fast to her faith. Some accounts say that she miraculously remained alive for three hours, singing praises to God, and was eventually decapitated. Other accounts hold that she died in the boiling vat.
St. Laura’s Feast Day: October 19th
