St. Leopold the Good Novena

Show HideSt. Leopold the Good was a ruler of Austria in the 1000s and 1100s. He was a married man with several children.
St. Leopold was a good and wise ruler and a very holy layman. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy saint in many aspects of your life.
St. Leopold the Good was born in 1073. Little is known for certain about his childhood, except that he was greatly influenced by a bishop named Altmann of Passau, who was deeply involved in the Gregorian reforms in the Church.
When Leopold was twenty-three years old in 1096, he became Margrave of Austria. As a ruler, Leopold made peace a priority. He was also very concerned with the prosperity of his people.
Leopold was married twice. Little is known about his first wife, who died in 1105. The two of them had no children. Leopold then married a woman named Agnes. She was the widow of Emperor Henry. At the time Leopold and Agnes were married, Agnes had two children from her first marriage. Leopold raised her two children as his own.
Leopold and Agnes eventually had eighteen children, though only eleven of them survived to adulthood. Leopold was a very good father to his children, showing love and gentleness to both his biological children and his two stepchildren.
During his reign as Margrave of Austria, Leopold did a lot of good for both the country and the Church. He had many monasteries built, several of which were in areas of wilderness. By building monasteries in the wilderness, Leopold knew that the monks who lived in these monasteries would tame the land and make the area more attractive to other settlers.
Many of the monasteries Leopold established are still in existence today. His favorite monastery, at which he asked to be buried when he died, was Klosterneuburg near Vienna. One legend holds that the Virgin Mary appeared to Leopold and led him to find one of his wife’s veils that had been missing for several years. The place where he found the veil became the sight of the Klosterneuburg Monastery. Later, he also built a residence for himself there.
Another significant monastery he established was Heilegenkreuz in Lower Austria. This monastery houses a relic of the True Cross.
Leopold also assisted the Church during his time as ruler of Austria by supporting the pope in a conflict with various European kings. The kings wanted to appoint bishops of their choosing for areas under their rule rather than allow the Church to appoint bishops.
Another of Leopold’s accomplishments as ruler of Austria was to further develop the cities of Klosterneuburg, Vienna, and Krems.
Leopold died in 1136. His people mourned the death of their honest and holy ruler. He was buried at the Klosterneuburg Monastery.
