St. Louis de Montfort is best known for his work True Devotion to Mary and the practice of consecrating one’s life to Jesus through Mary. In this novena, we pray to Jesus through Mary by the intercession of St. Louis de Montfort.
About St. Louis de Montfort
St. Louis de Montfort was a priest in France at the turn of the 18th century. When he was 12, he attended the Jesuit College of St. Thomas à Becket, where he studied philosophy and theology. Fr. Julien Bellier helped plant in his heart a strong yearning to preach missions among the very poor. He attended the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice, where he was a librarian. This gave him the opportunity to study the Virgin Mary, which led to his devotion to the Rosary and writing his book The Secret of the Rosary.
He was ordained a priest in 1700. He wanted to go to the foreign missions, but was appointed in France. He joined the third order Dominicans and created groups of priests to preach missions and retreats. He placed it all under the protection of the Virgin Mary, which led to the founding of the Company of Mary.
He still desired to go on foreign missions, but when he made a pilgrimage to Rome to ask Pope Clement XI for guidance, the pope gave him the title of Apostolic Missionary and told him that there was plenty of work for him still in France.
He had a strong devotion to Mary. His most popular work, True Devotion to Mary, encourages people to consecrate their lives to Jesus through Mary. This devotion has been practiced by many Catholics, including Pope Pius XI and St. John Paul II.
