St. Luke was the author of the Gospel of Luke. He also wrote the Acts of the Apostles. St. Paul also refers to St. Luke as a physician.

St. Luke devoted a lot of his life to preaching the Good News and writing of Jesus. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy writer of Scripture in your life!

About St. Luke

Few things are known for certain about the early life of St. Luke, but it is thought that he was a Gentile of Greek descent. The historian Eusebius says that Luke was born at Antioch in Syria. Eusebius also confirms that Luke was a physician.

Some scholars hold that St. Luke was actually born a slave and was educated as a physician to serve the family who owned him, but it is not known for certain.

Though Luke was not one of Jesus’ Apostles, he had a close relationship with St. Paul.

We know nothing of Luke's conversion to Christianity, but he joined St. Paul on Paul’s missionary journeys around the year 51. Together they traveled to Samothrace, Neapolis, Philippi, Melitus, Tyre, Caesarea, and Jerusalem.

The Acts of the Apostles, written by St. Luke, tells us that Luke was present during certain parts of St. Paul’s missionary works but not all of them, because he writes part of the book in the third person and part in the first person.

Around the year 61, Paul was imprisoned in Rome. He writes in Philemon and 2 Timothy that Luke stayed with him as a faithful companion during this time.

In the writings of St. Luke, it is apparent that he had a special affinity for the poor and the ostracized. His Gospel seems aimed at a Gentile audience. It relates Jesus praising the faith of the Gentiles. It is also the only Gospel that tells the stories of the Good Samaritan and the thankful Samaritan leper.

Luke’s Gospel also shows his care for the poor in the story of the rich man and Lazarus. It is also the only Gospel that relates Mary’s Magnificat, in which she says that God has “filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.”

It can also be inferred that St. Luke held the Blessed Mother in deep regard, as his Gospel tells many details about Mary’s life. His Gospel tells the story of the Annunciation when Gabriel appeared to Mary and she said “yes” to God’s plan. It also tells of the Visitation when she visited Elizabeth, of the Magnificat, of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and of the Finding in the Temple when Jesus was twelve years old.

After the death of St. Paul, the details of Luke’s remaining years of life are not certain. He may have preached in Greece or Gaul. Some accounts say that he was martyred, though this is not certain.

St. Luke’s Feast Day: October 18th
