About St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi
St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi was born in 1566 in Florence. She was named Caterina Lucrezia, though she was commonly called Lucrezia. Her parents were wealthy and were members of the nobility.
When Lucrezia was nine years old, she learned to meditate. She also began to practice mortifications. She made a crown of thorns and often wore it. Though it was not common at the time for young children to receive their First Communion, Lucrezia received hers at age ten.
Lucrezia soon made a vow of virginity. When she was fourteen, her father sent her to be educated by nuns of the Order of Malta. Before long, her father called her home so that she could be married to a young nobleman. Lucrezia did not want to marry because of her vow. When she told her father of her vow, he eventually agreed to let her enter the religious life instead.
Lucrezia chose to enter the Carmelite monastery in Florence. She became a Carmelite novice in 1583, taking the name Sister Mary Magdalen.
After about a year in the Carmelite novitiate, Sister Mary Magdalen became very ill. She was in a great amount of pain, but she said, “Those who call to mind the sufferings of Christ, and who offer up their own to God through His Passion, find their pains sweet and pleasant.”
When it seemed that she would die soon, her superiors allowed her to make her vows in a private ceremony. She had to lie on a cot even while making her vows because she was so ill. Immediately after she made her vows, she fell into a two-hour ecstasy. For the next forty days after receiving Communion, Mary fell into long ecstasies.
Mary’s confessor asked her to dictate her experiences so others could write them down. Five large volumes were filled with writings of what she experienced over the next six years.
During her lifetime, it is believed that Mary bilocated on a number of occasions. She also cured many sick people and predicted future events. She predicted that Cardinal Alessandro de’ Medici would be elected to the papacy. He later became Pope Leo XI.
Mary died in 1607, when she was 41. Two years after her death, her confessor published writings on her life. Her body was found to be incorrupt, and her beatification process began in 1610. She was canonized in 1668.
