St. Nicholas of Tolentino lived in Italy in the 1200s-1300s. He was a member of the Augustinian religious order. He was also a mystic.

St. Nicholas of Tolentino became known as a particular patron of holy souls in purgatory. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy saint in many aspects of your life.

About St. Nicholas of Tolentino

St. Nicholas of Tolentino was born in Italy in 1245. While trying to conceive a child, his parents prayed for St. Nicholas of Myra’s intercession. Once their child was born, they named him after St. Nicholas.

Little is known about Nicholas’ early life, except that he was kind, gentle, and studious during his early years.

When Nicholas was sixteen years old, he entered the Augustinian religious order. He became a student of Blessed Angelus de Scarpetti. He also studied to become a priest, and he was ordained in 1270 when he was twenty-five years old. Before long, he became known for his preaching.

Nicholas’ superiors entrusted him with the work of feeding the poor who begged at the monastery. In this role, he was so generous that he gave away too many of the supplies of the monastery to feed the poor.

On one occasion, Nicholas fasted for a long period of time and became very weak. Our Lady and St. Augustine appeared to him in a vision and instructed him to eat bread marked with a cross and dipped in water. He did so and regained his strength immediately. He soon began giving this bread to the poor. He also brought about cures through his prayers for some who were ailing.

Nicholas continued to fast intensely throughout his life. Often following these fasts, he had visions. Many of his visions were of purgatory and the suffering souls. Praying for those in purgatory came to be one of the main elements of his spirituality.

Nicholas also saw visions of angels saying “To Tolentino.” He interpreted this vision to mean that God wished him to move to Tolentino. He moved there in 1274 and remained there for the rest of his life.

Nicholas worked as a peacemaker in Tolentino. At the time, there were two factions fighting in the city. One faction supported the pope and the other faction supported the Holy Roman Emperor. Nicholas also worked against the decline of morality and lack of religiousness that plagued the city at the time.

Nicholas continually ministered to the poor and to prisoners throughout his life. Whenever he was able to work miracles for people through his prayers, he always asked them to keep the matter to themselves because he was only working as God’s instrument.

Eventually, Nicholas became very ill. Though he suffered severely as he neared his death, he continued to practice the mortifications he had been practicing for years. He died in 1305.
