St. Paschasius Radbertus was a theologian who lived in the 700s-800s in France. He was a Benedictine monk. He also became an abbott.

St. Paschasius Radbertus made many significant contributions to the Church through his writings. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy theologian in many aspects of your life.

About St. Paschasius Radbertus

St. Paschasius Radbertus was born around the year 785. As an infant, he was abandoned or orphaned and placed on the steps of a convent. He was raised by the nuns there.

Little is known for certain about his childhood, but Paschasius entered a Benedictine monastery at a young age. He received a strong education in the writings of the Church Fathers and in Scripture.

After he was ordained a deacon, he became the novice master and headmaster of the monastery at Corbie. In 822, he helped establish an abbey at New Corbie. As leader of this monastery, Paschasius helped its school to become very well known.

In 826 and 836, Paschasius wrote two spiritual biographies of his role models. His Vita Adalardi was a biography of St. Adalard of Corbie, and Vita Walae was a biography of St. Wala of Corbie.

In 831, Paschasius wrote a treatise on the Eucharist called De Corpore et Sanguine Domini. He wrote it initially as an instructional piece for the monks under his authority. He revised this treatise in 844 and then presented it to King Charles II the Bald.

This treatise discussed the nature of the Eucharist. It was the first long treatise on the Eucharist that was written in the West. It discussed the doctrine of transubstantiation.

A monk named Ratramnus opposed the teachings of Paschius’ treaty and wrote a rebuttal treaty of his own, under the same title.

Around the year 843, Paschasius was made abbot of his monastery. He made plans for reform, but others opposed his plans. After serving as abbot for ten years, he resigned in order to devote himself to his studies.

Paschasius left the Corbie monastery and lived in self-imposed exile at the monastery of Saint-Riquier. It is not known for certain if his decision to leave Corbie was influenced by disputes between him and others in the Corbie monastery. But the many misunderstandings between him and some of the other monks may have contributed to his departure and his resignation as abbot.

Later in his life, Paschasius returned to the Corbie monastery. He remained there until his death in 865.

Paschasius was buried in the Church of St. John in Corbie. Before long, many miracles came to be reported from those who had sought his intercession at his tomb. The pope then had his remains moved to the Church of St. Peter in Corbie.

Pope Gregory VII canonized Paschasius in 1073.
