Show HideSt. Pedro Calungsod was a Filipino martyr. He lived in the 1600s. He worked as a missionary in Guam. He brought many people to the Church before he was eventually killed on account of his Faith.
You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy martyr in your life!
About St. Pedro Calungsod
St. Pedro Calungsod was born in 1654 in the Philippines, though the exact area of the Philippines is uncertain. Nothing is known for certain about his family.
Pedro was very devoted to God from the time he was young. He had a particular devotion to the Eucharist and to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
As a boy, he received an education at a boarding school that was run by Spanish Jesuits. He studied theology diligently, and he learned Spanish. Because he wanted to be a missionary, he also learned other skills that would be useful to him as a missionary. These skills included carpentry, drawing, painting, and singing.
When Pedro was thirteen or fourteen years old, he began his life as a missionary. He joined some Spanish missionaries who were preparing to travel to the Marianas Islands for missionary work. The group included some Jesuit priests, some lay missionaries, and a priest named Diego Luis de San Vitores who has been beatified.
When the group arrived in Guam, Pedro began to serve as a sacristan. His companions saw him as a devout young man who could be a good example to the youth they sought to catechize.
As Pedro and his companions began their missionary work, some of the native people became suspicious of them. Some medicine men began to spread rumors about the missionaries, fearing that the missionaries would begin to have a greater influence over the people than they did themselves.
One of these medicine men was a criminal named Choco. He had been exiled from the Philippines to Guam because of his crimes. Choco convinced a group of native people that the missionaries were poisoning natives through baptismal water and through the Mass.
According to some accounts, Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores was called to the home of a native woman one night on the pretense of baptizing her child. Pedro accompanied Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores, to assist him. But the two of them were ambushed by Choco and his companions.
Pedro could have escaped, but he courageously chose instead to remain with the priest. A lance was thrown at Pedro, and it pierced his heart. The ambushing group also killed Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores.
The bodies of Pedro and the priest were stripped and thrown into the sea. The cause for their canonization was begun just months after their deaths, but political unrest interfered and the cause was not taken up again for centuries. He was finally canonized in 2012.

Why Pray the St. Pedro Calungsod Novena?
St. Pedro Calungsod is the patron saint of the Philippines and of Guam. You can ask him to pray for you if you live in the Philippines or Guam, or if you are planning to travel to the Philippines or Guam. You can also ask him to pray for someone you know who lives in or is traveling to one of these countries.
Additionally, St. Pedro Calungsod is the patron saint of catechumens. You can seek his intercession if you are a catechumen, or you can ask him to pray for a catechumen whom you know.

St. Pedro Calungsod, you were very devoted to God from the time you were young. When you were still a young teen, you longed to serve Him as a missionary.
Please bring my petitions before God Whom you longed to serve!
You were an example of holiness to many people during your short life. When you were beatified, Pope St. John Paul II noted how devoted you were to the Eucharist in your life.
Pray for me, that I may grow in my devotion to the Eucharist each day. Pray that I may always make use of the great gift that the Eucharist is to me.

St. Pedro Calungsod, you and your companions worked diligently to bring the native people of Guam to God. You continued in this holy work despite the difficulties of false rumors and suspicions.
Please continue to bring my petitions before the throne of God!
When a criminal organized a group of people to attack you and your companions on account of these rumors, you never wavered in your faith or your commitment to God’s service.
Pray for me, that I may be as steadfast in my Faith as you were. Pray that I may never allow difficulties to deter me from serving God faithfully.

St. Pedro Calungsod, you were eager to devote your life to God as a missionary. Even when you were faced with danger to your life on account of your Faith, you never wavered in your commitment to God.
Please do not waver in bringing my petitions before God!
You stayed courageously beside Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores as he was attacked and killed. You were killed by a lance through your heart.
Pray for me, that I may always be courageous in practicing my Faith. Pray that I may hold fast to my Faith even to the point of death if necessary.
