St. Philip Benizi was a priest who lived in Italy in the 1200s. He was a member of the Servite religious order. He also contributed to reviving the Servite order.

St. Philip Benizi became well known for his preaching. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy preacher in many aspects of your life.

About St. Philip Benizi

St. Philip Benizi was born in 1233 in Florence, Italy. His parents were members of the nobility. Little is known for certain about his childhood.

As a young man, Philip studied medicine and philosophy. He earned doctorate degrees in both subjects.

In 1253, Philip entered the Servite religious order as a lay brother. During this time, he devoted himself to prayer and growth in holiness. He would often go to a cavern in order to meditate. Two visiting Dominicans observed his piety and insisted that he should be ordained as a priest.

Soon, Philip became well known for his preaching. In 1262, he was made novice master of his order in Siena. Though he did not want to be placed in a prominent position, he was made prior general of the whole order.

In 1265, Philip was being considered as a candidate for the papacy. He was so deeply opposed to this possibility that he ran away to a cave and hid there until the papal election was finished with the election of Clement IV.

In 1274, the Second Council of Lyons enforced an edict from the Fourth Lateran Council that forbade the formation of new religious orders. It also completely suppressed any mendicant orders that the pope had not yet formally approved. Therefore, Pope Innocent V sent a letter to Philip stating that the Servite order had been suppressed.

Philip traveled to Rome to discuss the matter with Pope Innocent. But the pope died before Philip arrived there. The next pope reigned only five weeks before dying. Pope John XXI finally gave the Servites permission to continue as they were before they were suppressed.

In 1279, Philip helped St. Juliana establish the Third Order of the Servites. In 1283, there was some strong sentiment against the pope in the city of Forli within the papal states. Pope Martin IV asked Philip to travel there to try to bring unity to the divided city.

One legend holds that Philip met St. Peregrine Laziosi when Peregrine was eighteen years old. Peregrine was initially very antagonistic toward Philip, but Philip inspired him to later become a member of the Servites.

In 1284, Philip sent Servite missionaries to the Far East. Philip did a lot of important work in reforming the Servite religious order. He devoted himself to this work with great patience and zeal.

Philip died in 1284. He is buried in the church of San Filippo Benizi in Todi, Italy.
