About St. Raymond Penyafort

St. Raymond Penyafort was born in 1175 near Barcelona, Spain. His parents were members of the nobility. Little is known about his childhood, except that he was very devoted to the Blessed Mother.

When Raymond was a young man, he studied civil and canon law in Barcelona. He also studied at the University of Bologna. After earning doctorate degrees in both civil and canon law, he taught canon law. He eventually moved to Bologna. He served as chair of canon law at the University of Bologna for three years.

Around this time, Raymond became acquainted with the preaching of Blessed Reginald, who was the prior of the Dominican friars in Bologna. Raymond felt drawn to enter the Dominicans. He became a Dominican friar in Barcelona when he was forty-seven years old.

Raymond assisted in the establishment of a religious order called the Royal, Celestial, and Military Order of Our Lady of Mercy and the Redemption of the Captives. This order was also known as the Mercedarians. Raymond helped St. Peter Nolasco to gain permission from King James I of Aragon to form the order.

Raymond also established a school at which Dominicans could study semitic languages. This study assisted them in the mission of liberating Christians who had been captured by Muslims.

From 1224-1226, Raymond wrote the Summa di casibus poenitentiae. This work was written for confessors and discussed many Church doctrines that were relevant to various sins. It came to be seen as an authoritative work on sins.

As Raymond’s reputation in canon law continued to grow, Pope Gregory IX asked that he work on codifying canon laws. In 1234, the pope commanded that Raymond’s codification of canon law should be considered authoritative. Raymond’s work on canon law was called the Decretals of Gregory IX. It was the standard of canon law for the next seven hundred years.

When Raymond was sixty years old, he attempted to retire. He was soon appointed as an archbishop, but he refused the appointment. Then he was made superior over the whole order of Dominicans. As superior, he visited all Dominican friaries and convents. He also composed a new set of constitutions for the order.

Raymond did a lot of work to help with the conversion of the Moors. He instituted the teaching of both the Arabic and Hebrew languages in several Dominican friaries for this purpose. He also established friaries in Arab-ruled areas.

Raymond died in 1275 when he was one hundred years old.
