St. Simon Stock lived a life of great holiness and devotion. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy Carmelite in many aspects of your life.

About St. Simon Stock

St. Simon Stock was born around the year 1165 in the area that is now England. Little is known for certain about his early life.

Legend holds that Simon’s surname “Stock” originated because he lived as a hermit in a hollow oak tree trunk beginning when he was twelve years old. It is believed that he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land when he was a young man. While there, he entered an early community of Carmelites.

With some fellow Carmelites, Simon returned from the Holy Land to Europe. He then went on to establish several Carmelite communities in Europe. He founded communities in Paris, Bologna, Cambridge, and Oxford. He also helped lead the Carmelite order to change in nature from a hermit order to one of mendicant friars.

Simon is most well known for his association with the brown scapular. Tradition holds that in 1251, Our Lady appeared to Simon in Cambridge, England. At the time, the Carmelites were experiencing oppression. In the words Our Lady spoke during her apparition, she gave reason to believe that the Carmelits would be preserved despite the oppression they were experiencing.

Our Lady gave St. Simon Stock a brown scapular and said to him, “Receive, my beloved son, this scapular of thy Order; it is a special sign of my favor, which I have obtained for thee and for thy children of Mount Carmel. He who dies clothed with this habit shall be preserved from eternal fire. It is the badge of salvation, a shield in time of danger, and a pledge of special peace and protection.”

The brown scapular continues to be worn today by many religious orders, including the Carmelites. Lay people may also wear the brown scapular as a sign of devotion to Our Lady and to enlist her assistance in their lives.

It is thought that Simon lived primarily at Aylesford in Kent. In 1254, the Carmelites elected Simon as superior-general of the order. It is likely that he was the fifth or sixth superior-general of the order, and it is believed that he served in this role until around 1266. The order spread and flourished under his leadership.

Simon lived a very penitential life. He ate only wild apples, roots, and herbs, and he drank only water. He was also very devoted to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

It is believed that Simon died in 1265 in Bordeaux, France.
