Show HideSt. Stanislaus Kostka was a Jesuit novice from Poland. He lived in the 1500s and died as a young man. He overcame many obstacles in order to enter religious life.
Despite his short life, St. Stanislaus Kostka was very holy. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy young man in your life!
About St. Stanislaus Kostka
St. Stanislaus Kostka was born in 1550 in Rostkow, Poland. His father was a senator, and his family was part of the nobility. Stanislaus had six siblings, five of whom were younger than him. His parents intended for Stanislaus to follow in his father’s footsteps and enter a prominent worldly profession.
Stanislaus was very pious and religious from the time he was young. When he was fourteen years old, Stanislaus’ parents sent him and his older brother to study at a Jesuit college in Vienna.
In 1565, Stanislaus became very ill and began to fear that he would die. He and his brother were living in the home of a staunch Protestant who would not allow a priest to bring the Blessed Sacrament to Stanislaus. Fearing that he would die without receiving Viaticum, Stanislaus prayed to St. Barbara for help.
Soon after, Stanislaus saw a vision of St. Barbara. Two angels accompanied her, and they brought the Eucharist to him. After this experience, Stanislaus recovered from his illness.
Stanislaus soon realized that God was calling him to enter the Jesuits. He asked the Jesuit provincial in Vienna for admission, but the provincial told him he would need permission from his parents. Stanislaus knew that his parents would not give approval, so he continued to look for another means of entry to the order.
Stanislaus was told that he might seek permission to enter from the Jesuit provincial in Germany. So he disguised himself as a poor man and began the journey. His older brother was angry and tried to stop Stanislaus, but his brother did not recognize Stanislaus dressed as a poor man.
The Jesuit provincial in Germany saw Stanislaus’ sincerity and holiness. He agreed to allow Stanislaus to enter the order. He arranged for Stanislaus to travel with two other young Jesuits to Rome, in order that Stanislaus would certainly be far enough away from his family in Poland that they could not interfere with his vocation.
Stanislaus entered the Jesuit novitiate and studied briefly at the Roman college. He soon contracted an illness. Though he did not seem to be severely ill, he had a premonition that he would die soon. Shortly after, his health took a sudden turn for the worse. He received Viaticum and prayed with those who were with him.
On the feast of the Assumption, he said he saw a vision of Mary coming to him with angels to bring him to Heaven. He died soon after the vision.

Please bring my petitions before God Whom you served!
Your parents attempted to hinder you as you tried to carry out God’s will in your life. Despite these obstacles, you persevered in entering the Jesuits and devoting your life to God.
Pray for me, that I may never allow any obstacles to deter me from serving God. Pray that I may always be eager to devote my life fully to God.

St. Stanislaus Kostka, you became very ill during your time as a student. Though you feared you would die without the sacraments since you were living in the home of a staunch Protestant, you persevered in praying for the grace of Viaticum before death.
Please persevere in bringing my petitions before the throne of God!
God rewarded your faithfulness by sending you a vision of St. Barbara and angels bringing you the Eucharist. You eventually recovered, and you continued to devote your life to God.
Pray for me, that I may never be discouraged in the face of difficulties. Pray that I may be as faithful a servant of God as you were.
