Show HideSt. Vincent Ferrer was a priest who lived in what is now Spain in the 1300s and 1400s. He became well known for his preaching. He was a member of the Dominican religious order.
St. Vincent Ferrer did a lot of important work for the Church. You can use this novena to seek intercession from this holy priest in many aspects of your life.
About St. Vincent Ferrer
St. Vincent Ferrer was born in 1350 in Valencia. He had three siblings, and his father was a notary.
Vincent began practicing holy work during his childhood. He gave alms to the poor and fasted twice per week. When Vincent was eight years old, he began to study theology. He began studying philosophy when he was fourteen, and he entered the Dominican religious order at age eighteen.
During Vincent’s novitiate, he struggled with severe temptations to leave the order. With prayer and penance, he was able to persevere through these temptations and hold fast to his vocation.
Vincent committed large portions of Scripture to memory. He made his solemn profession of vows, and he published a treatise soon after. In 1379, he was ordained to the priesthood. He soon began to give lectures on philosophy, and he eventually earned a doctorate in theology.
When Vincent’s superiors sent him to Barcelona, he continued giving lectures and began to devote himself to preaching.
Around this time, the Western Schism brought confusion to the Church as three different men claimed to be the true pope. Vincent did all he could to help the Church through this time but was ultimately unsuccessful in his efforts. He found the schism to be so distressing that it eventually caused him to become ill.
Throughout Vincent’s life, he devoted a lot of effort to missionary work. He traveled to Scotland, Ireland, England, Italy, Switzerland, France, Castile, and Aragon to preach. During this time, Vincent is also said to have worked miracles.Through his preaching and through the miracles God worked through him, he brought many people to the Church.
Some historians hold that, while Vincent only spoke the Catalan language, he possessed the gift of tongues to preach in other languages. Despite being very intellectual himself, he preached in common speech that appealed to ordinary people.
In 1410, the King of Aragon died without leaving an heir to the throne. When five different royal candidates came forward in an attempt to claim the throne, Vincent was chosen as a representative of Valencia on a committee that was to determine who should be king. Vincent chose Ferdinand of Antequera as the next king, and he was soon crowned king.
In 1419, Vincent died at Vannes in Brittany. He was sixty-nine years old. He was buried at the Vannes Cathedral. In 1455, he was canonized by Pope Callixtus III.
