Show HideThe Transfiguration is a feast that has been celebrated in the Church for many centuries. The feast commemorates the occasion on which Jesus became transfigured before Peter, James, and John. The Transfiguration of Christ occurred on Mount Tabor.
The Transfiguration was an important event in the life of Jesus that more fully revealed His divinity. You can use this novena to grow closer to Our Lord and to contemplate His divinity more deeply.
About the Transfiguration
The three Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke each give an account of the Transfiguration of Christ. In all three, the Transfiguration of Jesus occurs near the middle of the story shortly after Peter attests that Jesus is the Christ.
In the Gospel of Matthew, the Transfiguration is described in chapter 17, verses 1-8. In the Gospel of Mark, it is described in chapter 9, verses 2-8. In the Gospel of Luke, the Transfiguration is described in chapter 9, verses 28-36.
Scripture tells us that Jesus took Peter, James, and John with Him up a mountain. Though the Gospels do not identify the mountain He took them to, it is commonly believed that it was Mount Tabor.
After Jesus and His three accompanying Apostles reached the top of the mountain, Jesus became transfigured. This means that His face and His clothing shined very brightly. Matthew 17:2 says, “His face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light.” Mark 9:2-3 says, “And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller could bleach them.” Luke 9:29 says, “While he was praying, his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white.”
After the change in the appearance of Jesus’ face and clothes, Moses and Elijah appeared with Him. The three Apostles present saw Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah. According to the Gospel of Luke, Jesus was speaking with them about the upcoming events that would occur in Jerusalem: “[They] spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem,” (Luke 9:31).
As Moses and Elijah started to leave, Peter asked Jesus if he could make three tents. One was to be for Jesus, and the other two for Moses and Elijah. Before Peter is even able to finish asking his question, they all saw a bright cloud. A loud voice announced, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him,” (Luke 9:35).
When they heard the voice, the three Apostles fell down to the ground because they were afraid. Then, Jesus touched them and told them not to be afraid. As they opened their eyes, they saw only Jesus alone with them. Moses and Elijah were no longer there, and Jesus’ appearance had returned to normal.
The Transfiguration was a significant event in the life of Christ, showing His Apostles and eventually the rest of the world that He truly was the Son of God.
Why Pray the Transfiguration Novena?
You can pray the Transfiguration Novena if you are preparing to celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration. Or you can pray the Transfiguration Novena if you are seeking to grow in friendship with Jesus, since the Transfiguration was an event that Jesus shared with three of His closest friends. You can also use the Transfiguration Novena to help you grow in appreciation of Jesus’ divinity.

Transfiguration Novena - Day 1
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Dear Jesus, we thank You and praise You for the many ways You reveal Yourself to us. Through contemplation of the mystery of Your Transfiguration, help us grow closer to You!
When You were transfigured on the mountain top, You revealed Your divinity to the three Apostles who accompanied You. You shone like the sun, and the voice of the Father announced that You were His Beloved Son. Peter asked to make tents for You, Moses, and Elijah. He did not fully understand what was happening.
We ask You to bring all people closer to You, and we especially ask today that You pour out the grace of understanding on all who are struggling to understand Your plan in their lives.
Help us to surrender to You more deeply each day. Give us the grace to grow in love for You at every opportunity.

Transfiguration Novena - Day 2
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Dear Jesus, we thank You and praise You for the many ways You reveal Yourself to us. Through contemplation of the mystery of Your Transfiguration, help us grow closer to You.
During Your Transfiguration, Your face and clothes shone brightly. The voice of God the Father said that You were His Beloved Son. Shortly before the Transfiguration, Peter had confessed His faith in Your divinity. Then, the Transfiguration showed clearly that You were indeed the divine Son of God.
We ask You to bring all people closer to You, and we especially ask today that You help all people who doubt Your divinity to come to a deep faith in You.
Help us to work each day to overcome our faults. Give us the grace to do everything necessary to advance in holiness and love for You.

Dear Jesus, we thank You and praise You for the many ways You reveal Yourself to us. Through contemplation of the mystery of Your Transfiguration, help us grow closer to You.
You were transfigured before Peter, James, and John on the top of Mount Tabor. Your face and clothes appeared shining like the sun. Moses and Elijah appeared beside You, and they spoke with You about what You would soon accomplish in Jerusalem through Your suffering and death.
We ask You to bring all people closer to You, and we especially ask today that You give strength to all people who are preparing to undergo severe suffering.
Help us to persevere through every difficulty we face out of love for You. Give us the grace to always rely fully on You for all that we need.

Dear Jesus, we thank You and praise You for the many ways You reveal Yourself to us. Through contemplation of the mystery of Your Transfiguration, help us grow closer to You.
When You were transfigured on the top of Mount Tabor, Your divinity was made apparent to the three Apostles who were witnesses. The voice of God the Father announced that You were His Beloved Son. He commanded the Apostles and all people to listen to You.
We ask You to bring all people closer to You, and we especially ask today that You help us and all people to grow in true obedience to You.
Help us to grow in all the virtues that are necessary for our holiness. Give us the grace to unite ourselves more fully to You at every opportunity in our lives.

During Your Transfiguration atop Mount Tabor, You revealed Your divinity. Your clothes and face shone brightly, and the voice of the Father said that You were His beloved Son. Peter, James, and John did not fully understand what was happening, but You called them as You call each of us to surrender fully to You.
We ask You to bring all people closer to You, and we especially ask today that You help us and all people to grow in the ability to surrender fully to Your will.
Help us to become Your worthy servants in every circumstance in our lives. Give us the grace to unite ourselves more fully to You each day.

Scripture tells us that during Your Transfiguration, Your face and clothes shone more brightly than any earthly thing could. The voice of the Father announced that You were His beloved Son and that we should listen to You. Your Transfiguration displayed Your divinity clearly.
We ask You to bring all people closer to You, and we especially ask today that You help us and all people to grow in understanding of the mystery of Your divinity.
Help us to love You more and more each day of our lives. Give us the grace to surrender to You more fully at every opportunity we encounter.

Dear Jesus, we thank You and praise You for the many ways You reveal Yourself to us. Through contemplation of the mystery of Your Transfiguration, help us grow closer to You.
There are many holy mysteries that we cannot fully understand. When You were Transfigured atop Mount Tabor, You revealed the mystery of Your divinity more deeply. Peter, James, and John fell down in holy fear at the sound of the Father’s voice. We should have a similar sense of awe and fear in Your presence.
We ask You to bring all people closer to You, and we especially ask today that You help us and all people to grow in holy awe.
Help us to do all we can to grow in friendship with You in our lives. Give us the grace to devote ourselves more fully to You each day.

Dear Jesus, we thank You and praise You for the many ways You reveal Yourself to us. Through contemplation of the mystery of Your Transfiguration, help us grow closer to You.
During Your Transfiguration, You revealed Yourself more deeply to three of Your Apostles. Peter, James, and John were privileged to see this manifestation of Your divinity. These three Apostles were Your close friends. They worked to carry out Your will and to establish Your Church not long after this event.
We ask You to bring all people closer to You, and we especially ask today that You help Your Church and all her members to come to a deeper holiness.
Help us to always be eager to serve You in whatever ways You call us to. Give us the grace to grow in intimacy with You each day.
